Fruit and Cancer
by Dr. Douglas N. Graham <drdouggrahamuk@aol.com>
It has often been suggested that cancer patients should avoid fruit, for a variety of reasons. Fruit has been contraindicated because it supposedly will: counteract various treatment procedures, result in unwanted weight loss, acidify the body, upset normal blood gas levels, and feed cancer cells. In spite of the fact that fruit has been treated as health food throughout history, denigrating fruit has come into vogue in many circles. Is there any truth to these allegations?
Fruit counteracts treatment procedures
Much of the information that wends its way into the raw food world originated in the cooked world. In this case, the initial anti-fruit bias came from traditional Western medicine. The success of both chemo and radiation treatments depend upon a lowering of immune function in the body. The consumption of fruit results in raises in immune function. It is common in medicine to ignore the overall health of the afflicted person in pursuit of a treatment for their specific condition. Hence it is easy to understand how fruit initially got its unwarranted negative reputation.
Fruit causes unwanted weight loss
It was common thirty and forty years ago for a person dying of cancer to become extremely emaciated before their death. This weight loss was somehow associated with being a causative or predisposing factor in cancer, rather than a potentially life saving body-generated response. There have been few studies done on raw foods and most of those that have been done have not studied successful or long-term raw fooders. It has been concluded in most of those studies that uncontrollable and often unhealthy weight loss is associated with the raw food diet and with the consumption of fruit. This further strengthened the mainstream concept that fruit is bad for anyone with cancer concerns.
Overweight to the point of morbid obesity has grown to epidemic proportions in the Western world. The mainstream view of normal body fat levels has been skewed to allow for several dozen extra pounds without gaining notice. The Standard Westernized Diet tends to result in unwanted weight gain. Fruit consumption helps to bring weight towards a healthy normal level. Many people who follow a diet predominated by fruit suffer no weight abnormalities at all, including many of the world's finest athletes.
Fruit acidifies the body
Cancer has been associated with an acid condition in the body. It has not been established whether this is cause or effect. Once again a nutritional misconception has acquired mainstream acceptance. When a person eats a healthy meal it generally leaves the stomach rapidly, usually in less than an hour. More difficult-to-digest foods can be held in the stomach for twenty-four hours and longer. When a person eats a difficult to digest meal for dinner and then has fruit for breakfast, they are prone to acid stomach, and often will blame the fruit. The fruit is not the cause of the problem but simply sheds light on the fact that a poor food choice had been made the night before.
Many people mistakenly assume that the consumption of acid fruits will somehow acidify the body. The chemistry of digestion demonstrates that this is not so. The determining factor as to food's alkaline or acid reaction in the body is its mineral content. If acid minerals predominate, the food will have an acid reaction in the body. Since alkaline minerals predominate in almost all fruits, it is safe to say that fruit has an alkalizing impact upon the body.

Stimulation, Sedation And The Hygienic Way
By Prof. Rozalind Gruben <rozgruben@aol.com>
A dietary program of exclusively fresh raw fruit, eaten in simple combinations, will certainly result in an acceleration of the body's attempts to rid itself of toxic matter and rebalance itself. There is no food that can conduct a detox' process, just as no food can undertake the task of healing or
repairing of tissues. Foods are simply raw materials that the body will either use or discard. Only the body, under the command of its brain, can go about cleansing, healing, repairing and rebalancing itself. In any situation where there are symptoms of bodily distress it indicates the
need to minimize energy expenditure on digestion and maximize sleep. By taking such intelligent action the person will be working with the body, and supporting its actions. Fighting to suppress the body's self-healing efforts by attempting to poison it into submission with drugs, or other modalities, goes against all natural law. Such ignorant actions will inevitably result in an eventual breakdown of the body's integrity and eventually destroy its life force.
Like many natural processes, such as the tides of the ocean and the female menstrual cycle, the human digestion, absorption and elimination is programmed to function on a cyclical basis. In our natural environment it would not be safe for us to be wandering about at night. We are designed to be active during hours of daylight and safely hidden away sleeping throughout the hours of darkness. Upon awakening we would begin our daily search for food often requiring us to travel considerable distance and necessitate that we clamber and climb in order to find nourishment. It is a most unnatural, and therefore unhealthy, habit to consume food immediately upon awakening before we have performed any physical activity. This is, however, what most people in our culture do. Your body is naturally designed to not expect its first food of the day until the latter part of the morning, possibly not before around midday. It is then programmed to devote much of its energies to the periodic consumption and digestion of food until the onset of nightfall.
Once into the evening your body, governed by its natural cycle, begins the processes of assimilation which involves transporting all the various nutrients, provided by the day's eating, around to the appropriate parts of the body. By the early hours of the morning your body sets about the task of sorting out that, which is not needed or toxic. Processes involved in eliminating these
substances begin and continue until late morning. This phase of your body's digestive cycle is as vital to your body's survival as eating. Imagine living in a house for 10, 30 or 60 years without ever doing any cleaning or throwing out any rubbish! It would very soon become filthy and uninhabitable. Well this is exactly what can happen to a human body if attempts to thwart its daily
housework are made. The way to support the elimination phase of your digestive cycle is to either postpone breakfast until later in the morning or, if you feel you must eat early, consume exclusively fresh raw fruit. By consuming such an easily digested meal you minimally distract your nervous energy from its all-important tasks of elimination. It is also a very healthy habit to
perform some physical movement prior to eating. Develop the habit of earning each meal with a little exercise.
Enervation is the first step towards a loss of homeostasis and the onset of disease. Enervation can be defined as when there is insufficient nerve energy available to meet the demands of the organism's workload. An enervated body progressively becomes more toxic and out of balance.
Toxins
A toxin is any substance, or gas, that threatens the integrity of the living organism. In other words it is a poison. The body is designed to deal with toxins that would occur in its natural environment along with that incidental to its natural diet. When the level of toxins circulating in the blood exceed
these levels a state of toxemia exists. Toxemia is the second stage (following enervation) in the development of physical degeneration and disease.
Condiments
A condiment is any substance that is added to food in order to render it more flavorful. Substances that cannot be eaten as a meal by themselves do not qualify as foods, but as a toxin. Virtually all condiments come under the category of toxins. The habitual use of condiments results in:
* A progressive deadening of the taste buds rapidly resulting in an inability to taste natural foods without the addition of artificial and powerful flavors.
* A progressive increase in the use of the condiment due to the above.
* Increased toxic load on the body.
* Overeating due to appetite stimulation.
* Dehydration.
Salt
The most commonly used condiment is table salt. Although the human body does require sodium the amount provided within a daily meal of raw vegetable matter is, under normal circumstances, ample to meet the body's needs. In cases of extreme physical exertion, and/or exposure to intensely hot environmental temperatures, additional sodium can be healthfully obtained by eating celery. Excess salt can be fatal. Just one ounce of salt taken into the body at one time is sufficient to kill an adult male. The consumption of table salt quickly results in an excess of sodium in the body resulting in the following:
1. Edema - due to the toxic qualities of excess salt the body will retain water in order to suspend it in solution should levels rise above that which is healthful.
2. Dehydration - excess sodium results in an imbalance between intracellular and extra-cellular fluids. When there is a higher quantity of sodium than there is of potassium, intracellular fluids are leached out into the extra-cellular spaces.
3. Hypertension - as salt attracts water its presence in the bloodstream causes the level of water within the circulating blood to increase. The resulting greater blood volume raises blood pressure
4. Irritation - salt is an irritant, as can be experienced when applying it to an open wound. Excess salt in the diet can result in skin rashes, an irritable digestive tract, flaking scalp, sore eyes and various other complaints. Adding salt to foods during their preparation, such as cooking, or adding it at the table are not the only ways that it gains access to the body. Almost all processed foods contain salt, including sweet-tasting products. Baking soda and baking powder are especially high in salt. Antacids and even toothpaste can make significant contributions to the level of salt in the body.
Stimulating Substances
The consumption of any poisonous substances will, to some degree, result in stimulation and eventually sedation. Stimulants common to the diet of westernized populations include coffee, tea, carbonated drinks, condiments and additives.
Sedating Substances
The task of digesting any food is taxing on the nervous system. Any food eaten to excess will exhaust the nervous system resulting in a sedated state. In addition to this there are certain substances that, due to their chemical qualities, will have a direct sedating influence. A prime example of such toxins are opioids which are found in abundance within grains. The amino acid
tryptophan, found extensively in all forms of meat, also has a powerful narcotic effect upon the body. When refined sugar is consumed the initial state of stimulation that it produces is quickly followed by a dive in blood sugar resulting in lethargy and sleepiness.
In order to create a state of vibrant health your habits need to include:
1. Eating only of those foods you would find, presented in that form, in nature.
2. Eating only those foods you could obtain from the wild without the need for weaponry or protection.
3. Eating only those foods you would choose to make a meal of all by themselves.
4. Sleeping until you cannot sleep anymore.
5. Moving before you eat.
6. Knowing, speaking and living your own truth - whatever that may be

Sweating Away Stress: Exercise!
by Dr. Robert Sniadach <rwsniadach@transformationinstitute.org>
Exercise is your best friend in combating stress. The value of exercise as a stress reducer is well documented by many researchers. Why should exercise, which is a vigorous activity, have the power to relax us and eliminate stress? The answer is this:
Exercise channels the excess energy created by stress into a natural and positive outlet. As you learned earlier, stress causes the sympathetic nervous system to prepare for immediate physical action. The muscles become charged with fuel and the entire metabolism quickens. Unless this excess energy is released through exercise, it can overload and "burn out" the body's nervous system.
If stress becomes habitual and no exercise is taken, then the excess energy is internalized as tension within the muscles. When this occurs, the muscles and tendons themselves shorten and thicken. Excessive connective tissue is deposited, and a general consolidation of all the tissues occur. In other words, holding in the stress and tension has destructive effects on the muscles of the body.
When you exercise vigorously, you dispel this muscular energy in a natural and beneficial way. After all, stress produces the "fight-or-flight" reaction. If we can quite literally "run away" from stress by jogging or other forms of exercise, then we use the energy created by stress in a constructive manner.
A young man of my acquaintance was an aspiring body builder who went away to college. He was afraid that the time demands of college study would mean an end to his bodybuilding program. After a year of school, he returned with an amazing physique. I told him that it certainly looked like college agreed with his exercise routine after all.
He smiled, and said: "You know it's funny. I found out that the best way to get rid of tension and anxiety about my college studies and tests was to lift weights. The more anxious I got about any courses, the better it felt to work out with weights. It helped me burn up nervous energy that would have driven me crazy otherwise."
Exercise does reduce stress and aid relaxation. In his book, Learn to Relax, C. Eugene Walker concludes that exercise has the specific ability to reduce anxiety and tension. People on regular exercise programs tend to be more healthy, have better vital capacity, and in general, can cope with life in a more satisfactory way.
Regular exercise not only makes you feel better, but also makes you become more optimistic, and have a better self-image. So not only does exercise reduce anxiety, it seems to be a good preventive for developing future fears and stress problems.
Some people have downplayed the importance of exercise in stress reduction. They say that stress is "all in the mind" and the only effective way to combat stress is through mental or emotional avenues. Not true.
In research conducted by Richard Driscoll, groups of people who were suffering from high anxiety and personal stress were given four types of treatment. One group simply used visual imagery and imagined themselves relaxed, happy, and free from stress. Another group used only exercise. A third group used only physical relaxation techniques, and the last group combined exercise with a positive program of mental optimism.
The group which used exercise in addition to positive thinking had the highest success rate in reducing stress. The groups which did not use exercise programs with their other stress-reducing techniques had a much lower rate of success.
The evidence is in: to reduce stress, you must exercise.

A Message For Women
By Prof. Rozalind Gruben <rozgruben@aol.com>
As a woman you have an inborn sense of caring for others. As a result you may have a different way of viewing self-nurturing than the men in your life.
Men typically see their acts of self-caring as intelligent and healthy. Women typically feel guilty investing time in themselves, and view it as self indulgent.
As you go about your day today pay attention to how much time you invest in caring for others and compare it to the time you spend doing things to nurture and nourish yourself. Is there a balance or are you just giving out without putting anything back?
Remember - only by caring for yourself will you be able to care for others.

Vegetarians Do Not Need Salt
by Dr. Herbert M. Shelton
From The Science and Fine Art of Food and Nutrition - The Hygienic System: Volume II
Chapter XVI - Salt Eating
Bunge believed that salt is essential with vegetable foods to counteract the excess of potash. This notion was exploded by Renmerich and Kurz, who, by careful experiment, showed that salt does not have the effect Bunge attributed to it.
Bunge was a German chemist, who lived more than eighty years ago. He stated that vegetarians need and crave salt, whereas meat eaters need and crave it less. The theory was based on a misconception of "biochemistry" and not upon observations of vegetarians. As a rule, to which there are many exceptions, vegetarians abstain from salt and these abstainers experience no craving for salt. There is never a need to eat common table salt.
Vegetarians who crave salt are those who so prepare their vegetables that the organic salts that exist so abundantly in them are lost. All of the organic salts are soluble in water, and when the
vegetables are boiled and the water thrown away, there is naturally a craving for saltnot, however, for common table salt, but for the organic salts of foods. There are thousands of vegetable feeders who not only do not have a craving for salt but who positively loathe it.
Prof. Morgulis, who accepts the antiquated notion of Bunge, that vegetarians and vegetable eating animals crave and must have salt, admits, at the same time, that the lack of common salt in the food, of itself, has no ill effects on the general metabolism or on the digestive function." He points out that there is a much greater excretion of chlorine through the urine during the early part of a fast than in the latter stages, and says, "it is certain that most of this chlorine comes from the salt added as condiment to the food."
He tells us that when Grunewald kept rabbits on a diet practically free from chlorides, "the elimination of chlorides in the urine ceased almost at once," but no ill effects were, otherwise, observed. He adds that when "diuretin was administered after the excretion of chloride stopped as much as one gram of chloride was caused to be eliminated, and if the dosage was repeated several times symptoms of toxemia appeared such as extreme muscular weakness, trembling, paralysis of hind limbs which soon also extended to the anterior of the body and which, in a few days, resulted in death. The chlorine content of the blood actually diminished 50 and in some extreme cases even 75 per cent."
Diuretin (theobromin sodiosalicylate) is a poisonous powder or drug given to increase the flow of urine. The experiment described above proves that chlorine is extracted from the tissues of the body in neutralizing and expelling it. This loss of chlorine, from the organic compounds of the body, resulted in death. This does not prove that ordinary table salt is valuable to the body. The statement by Prof. Morgulis that "this effect was produced entirely through the withdrawal of chlorine from the tissues and oot by the diuretin itself, since this had no effect whatever when administered in conjunction with sodium chloride" does not prove that we need table salt, it only proves that we should not take diuretin. For, while diuretin may combine with inorganic salt and, while this may save the cell-chlorides, it by no means follows that inorganic salts of chlorine are of use to the tissues of the body. The body can utilize sodium and chlorine only when received from foods in organic combinations.
Prof. Morgulis repeats the old myth about animals craving salt and seeking salt and says, "hunters of deer, for instance, have always exploited this instinct, waiting for their game near the salt licks." Hunters have, also, always exploited the instinct of the ostrich to hide itself from danger by burying its head in the sand, waiting for their game near the sand dunes. The ostrich never runs his head in the sand and the deer never seeks the "salt licks and hunters do not even know where the "salt licks" are. This salt lick myth is like the vegetarians' craving for salt. The few vegetarians who use salt, use it sparingly. Most vegetarians do not use saltmost meat eaters use it freely. I do not know why "orthodox men continue to lie about vegetarians. They cannot plead ignorance of the fact, for the facts are obtainable and it behooves a men of science to obtain the facts before he writes.
It is everywhere admitted that taken in large doses sodium chloride is an irritant poison. In smaller doses it is said to be a beneficial stimulant. This is a medical delusion.

Training of the Mind for Health
by Dave Klein <dave@livingnutrition.com>
You are obviously on the self-improvement path if you are reading the HLI eNews. Isnt it good to know that we are all working on mastering at least some aspects of our mind, emotions and health? We are all in the same boat, striving for a higher degree of self mastery....and meeting up with the resistances from within. What are we made up of and what is training the mind about?
We each have a core essence, or true self, which is perfectly healthy, serene, whole and able to calmly and appropriately handle anything that life throws at us. Some would say that is our God nature or Goddess nature, our higher self, which we can also consider to be our inner parent. If only we were aligned with this healthful aspect of our self all of the time! Within our self we also have different socialized identities or personas which developed after our early childhood years. These different personas have different functions, expressing themselves in social situations, in professional situations, within family and close relational situations. For example (fill in your own name), theres insecure/needy Joe, overwhelmed/scared Joe, reactive/angry Joe, headstrong/righteous Joe, etc. Any of these socialized identities might be the rulers of our self-destructive habits, and we need to become fully aware of those identities while practicing skills for disengaging from them and and at the same time engaging in our poised, detached mature persona - the inner parent. Yes, we each have the ability to be our strong, health-wise adult persona which smartly guides us through life. How do we do that? By training our mind.
Training the mind is not about controlling the mind; rather, its about practicing self-awareness and actively choosing to merge with or engage in our mature, poised adult self while disengaging from our reactive, unhealthful identities - we bless them and let them go. This obviously takes work, mental work, mind training work. What is the work? Autosuggestion.
Autosuggestion works on the mind. Consistently repeated autosuggestion is very effective in many cases where the wise, mature adult part of our self says out loud or silently, in a gentle, nonjudgmental voice statements or directives such as:
Its ok, let the emotion come and go and take a rest now (instead of bingeing).
Its ok to stay awake and present with the emotion (instead of sedating yourself with bread or ice cream).
Its ok to let the anger go and bless him (instead of getting caught up in blaming Bob).
Its best to go to sleep now (instead of worrying late at night about something which is history).
Relax the jaw (instead of clenching it).
The problem is solvable, so go ahead and allow yourself to smile and breathe (instead of frowning and worrying).
You are loved and able to feel the love you desire (instead of believing that no one loves you).
In time you will heal from your trauma (instead of believing that you are damaged forever).
Its ok to release the tears (when sadness wells up).
Go ahead and give a big exhale (when conflict wells up).
You can try being with the with the emotion instead of running for comfort food (when you feel lonely, empty, hurt or scared inside).
Its time to stop eating now (when you know you are full, even though there is plenty more delicious food available).
The appropriate parental statement or directive needs to be lovingly and consistently repeated, day after day, until the mind adopts the new healthful way of responding to life. We can each work at this and develop a more healthful mind. Its usually useful to start by spending some time by yourself and writing down the behaviors you want to change, then choosing one to start with, then writing down an effective, gentle statement or directive. The constant nurturing voice of maturity from within will in time merge you into a more healthy persona, allowing for healthier habits, expanding joy and serenity to emerge more often.
Why does autosuggestion work? Because our minds operate in a way such that they listen to the wise parent. Yes, we each have an inner parent and, in a manner of speaking, autosuggestion is self-parenting or re-parenting.
In sum, mind training is process of nurturing self-love and directed by the wise parent within.

* ORGANIC GARDENING *
Spring Planting - Summer & Fall Harvesting
by Dave Klein <dave@livingnutrition.com>
With spring upon us, in most regions it is now time to clean up the garden, add some fresh mulch or compost and rock dust, and sow some seeds. This spring I am sowing: cucumbers (several varieties), tomatoes (many heirloom varieties), kale, lettuce, bok choy, tat soi, bell peppers, pumpkin, sweet corn and wildflowers. Two months ago I planted a white mulberry sapling and I am amazed to see that what was once a stick with no buds or branches is now a leaf and berry- sprouting little tree!
The joys of growing and picking our own food are the best! Im blessed to be living on a property with close to 100 fruit trees, including about 20 different varieties plus some walnut trees. Im happy to share if youd like to camp out in the orchard during Rawstock II. Im hopeful that two fig trees will be offering a ripe bounty at that time.
Happy growing!
