Russia Explores Fasting
By Dr. Vivian V. Vetrano
vvvetrano@rionet.cc
Last year I was honored by an invitation to the Republican scientific and practical conference entitled Baikal Readings - 1 - Fasting Therapy and Traditional Medicine held in Ulan-Ude, Buryatia Republic, Russia, October 7-9, 2003. I had laid the invitation aside and forgot about it. A few months ago I received another invitation with the agenda of the last invitation, and, after reading the agenda more carefully, I decided to take this invitation a bit more seriously.
The Republic of Buryatia Health Ministry is already organizing the scientific and practical conference Baikal Readings - 2 - on the use of fasting therapy and techniques of traditional medicine and has requested that I write a paper on fasting by May 15, 2004 for the new volume of scientific articles. The Minister of Health, V. Kozhevnikov, signed the letter.
It is interesting to note that the government is sponsoring the use of therapeutic fasting, and traditional Oriental medicine along with traditional medical care. The first day of the first conference took place at the Republican Children Hospital. After the welcoming address by the Minister of Health, a lecture was given on Organizational and Methodical Aspects of the Use of Fasting Therapy and Traditional Medicine in the Public Health System. There were speakers from Moscow, St. Petersburg, Perm, Novosibirsk, Bryansk, Tyumen, Minsk.
On the second day of the conference, at the National Library of Buryatia Republic, they held a round table discussion with patients who had experienced fasting therapy. The next session after lunch featured those who were using Traditional Oriental Medicine. This involved officials of the Republican and Municipal public health care institutions of different levels, the Baikalkurort Resort Directorate, executive bodies of Buryatia republic, its regions, Ulan-Ude City, The Peoples Khural (parliament), and the mass media was present. That ended the two-day official meetings.
Day three was a field trip to the Goryachinsk Resort where fasting is practiced. The tour included the Department of Fasting therapy. Then another round table Session with the officials took place and that was the end of the conference. The conferences will be held every two years.
I am presently taking care of a Russian lady. If she is well in 2005 when the next conference will be held, I will invite her to the round table discussion where patients get to talk about their fasting experiences. Its my intention to spread pure Natural Hygiene, especially preventive Hygiene, so people wont get so sick that they require any traditional medication, Oriental medicine, or even fasting!

Another Cat Tail
By Dr. Vivian Virginia Vetrano
vvvetrano@rionet.cc
This morning I had cantaloupe for breakfast and took it to the dining room table to eat. When I got back to the kitchen I discovered Cyclone, my cat, on the kitchen counter eating the other half!!! Actually, she was eating the stuff around the seeds and the seeds themselves when they would not fall off. She did not chew the seeds.
Dr. Shelton had 14 cats at his old Health School. They ate everything that was left over. They ate corn, left over cooked veggies (this was before I had taken over), watermelon, canteloupe and honey dew melon. Sugar is not bad for cats. In fact, big cats in the jungle, during certain seasons, eat a great deal of fresh fruit. Fructose gets into cells without the need for insulin. Cats and dogs can also digest starches via their large secretions of hydrochloric acid. They do have good pancreases and can secrete insulin.

Return to Paradise My Latest Visit to Fruition on Maui
by Don Weaver
earthdon@yahoo.com
Life is good! This seems to be the normal and natural awareness for those of us fortunate enough to understand and to live out the principles of Natural Hygiene, although when we spend too much time amongst man-made civilization we can sometimes lose touch with the truth of goodness. Luckily for me, I just spent three weeks at Fruition, my friends Stephan and Dorli Reeves 11-acre Paradise and Orchard of Eden on the lush green and moist slopes of Haleakala volcano on Maui. My spiritual and body connection to Life is good has been strongly regenerated, for which I give thanks to my friends and fruitful Mother Nature!
Many of you have read my article in Living Nutrition, Vol. 13 in 2002, People Planting Paradise Stephan Reeve on Maui. I praised his excellent work demonstrating for all of us how applied love and intelligence can quickly begin restoring Eden on any size land, and noted how he has taken to heart the wisdom of giving more to Nature than we take, generously giving his land rock dust and compost and thick mulches to feed the soil life abundantly. The approximately 200 trees mentioned in that article has now grown to over 400, approximately 175 varieties in 83 species! Stephan, ably assisted by his hardworking athletic mom Dorli, was the first and outstanding individual I thought of while reading the fine new book, WHOLENESS: On Education, Buckminster Fuller, and Tao (by Alex Gerber), and reading this quote by Bucky Fuller:
To be optimally effective, undertake at outset the most comprehensive task in the most comprehensive and incisively detailed manner.
Stephan works on the comprehensive task of regenerating the Earths biosphere, and while he cannot do the whole job himself (billions of us are needed), it is amazing and inspiring to observe how one dedicated individual like him (fueled physically by raw foods since I met him in 1987) can help lead and inspire cooperative regenerative actions throughout the local Kipahulu community and bioregion of which he is such a vital part. He and co-workers are extending their reforestation (including fruit forests) and native plant restoration efforts up the slopes of Haleakala across a broad sweep of land comprising multiple watersheds. It is clearly a labor of aloha and wisdom, and is even receiving funding support from the State of Hawaii.
I encourage everyone to recognize great examples like this, and consider doing the same or similar work wherever they can do so, on whatever scale from backyard garden on up. At the least you can quickly start feeling the regenerative benefits of outdoor work and eating superior mineralized-organic produce from your own remineralized and composted soil, as I do at home in California and as I certainly did at Fruition, enjoying plentiful fresh-picked veggies and truly tree-ripened fruits in abundance. Working daily on the land and frequently visiting the nearby stream with its waterfall and pools, including the gorgeous Dream Pool above and Loves Pool below at the marriage of stream and ocean, with alternating warm sunny and warm rainy weather and sweet pure air to breathe, was a genuine Heaven-on-Earth experience to cherish.
Other highlights included: playing basketball and soccer with old and new children and adult friends; seeing the work of the Kipahulu School for young children, meeting Heidi the sweet head teacher and volunteering to help them find needed books for a new kind of education; giving copies of Living Nutrition to the school, local farmers, and young interns who were quite interested to read them; receiving a fun visit from fellow raw food correspondent friend and athlete Tonya Kay during her vacation from the STOMP dance company; and having the special joyful satisfaction of giving 50 pounds of rock dust to each young tree in the main durian grove, followed by an equally generous mulch of composting wood chips. I can see in my minds eye how beautiful these 21 trees looked after this natural fertilization, and I can only imagine them growing healthy, strong, tall, and full of durians when they are ready to give their gifts. While fertilizing them I again felt the beauty of the saying It is better to give than to receive
however, it is entirely possible those durian trees may one day make me eat those words, and much more! Shall we say instead, it is only natural to both give and receive the Abundance of Nature, since we are designed to be a compassionately intelligent, wisely giving part of Nature? And then we can see, feel, smell, touch, taste, and know that it is good
Aloha!

Homocysteine Is Not To Be Feared
by V. Virginia Vetrano, D.C., hM.D., M.D.
I have received a lot of articles regarding homocysteine. People are being told that it is one of the risk factors of heart problems. have come to the following conclusion:
DO NOT BE FRIGHTENED ABOUT THE HIGH HOMOCYSTEINE COUNT. IT IS AN OTHER WAY FOR THE PHARMACOLOGISTS TO MAKE MONEY BY SELLING NEUTRACEUTICALS.
Homocysteine is broken down by four pathways; and it can be remethylated through two different enzymatic reactions. Homocysteine is merely a "risk" factor of heart disease. It does not cause heart disease. All the so called studies of it that I have read give percentages of "risk" and do not give numbers of deaths.
The research individual who is known as a professional research person will find what those who fund him wants to "discover" if they don't find it they twist the results and falcify reports so they can be funded again and again, because they have to make a living. It is not like we think it is; the honest, professor who is really interested in a subject and who is working diligently searching for truth. Read "The Body Electric" and how Dr. Robert Becker was ostracised, and passed by for grants year after year because he was discovering things that they did not want discovered and which were not popular among the conventional scientists.
Homocysteine is an amino acid produced by the breaking down or catabolism of methionine, a sulfur-containing essential amino acid. It is claimed that a high level of homocysteine in the blood may be associated with an increased risk of developing atherosclerosis; however, in the body homocysteine combines with serine, and produces cysteine and homoserine. In turn cysteine is found in most proteins, and is abundant in epithelial cells, but its most important function is to supply sulfur for valuable metabolic processes. When cysteine combines with oxygen becoming cysteic acid, and upon further oxidation it becomes taurine and taurine is needed to form bile salts. Homoserine, is another amino acid, used in building some essential amino acids.
Vegetarians should not have any problem because all the foods they eat are high in folic acid, which suposedly lowers the levels of homocysteine. People are told that they need vitamin B6 and B12 supplementation for high homocysteine levels.
All we have to remember is that when we eat natural foods in their natural state and obey the laws of life our metabolic processes will be normal. Also, the products of amino acids, change in the body as they are metabolized and the products that are made are useful again and again; until finally they are spent and eliminated vial the kidneys. Remember: the products of natural food substances are useful. The products of supplements are not useful and are most often toxic.

Q & As With Dr. Douglas Graham
foodnsport@aol.com
Q: Is honey a health food?
A: Besides the impurities contained in honey (it usually contains bee excrement, foreign matter, and toxic acids), let's be clear; honey is not vegan fare. Bees work hard for their food. I feel no desire to take it from them. Sure, honey is sweet, but it is not a fruit. The fact that it has shelf life is a negative, not a plus, as I see it. Any food that doesn't go bad was never good, in my opinion.
Honey does not contain the essentials we associate with healthful eating such as: water, fiber, and phytonutrients. I cannot recommend honey to a true health seeker.
Q: How does one properly determine the percentage of his diet that is raw?
A: If we speak in terms of percentage of calories, everyone will know exactly what we mean. If we leave the "unit" value out, then no one knows what you mean.
If you eat all cooked for the day but eat a huge green salad, the salad greens themselves would likely make up 75% or more of the total volume, but less than 5% of the total calories.
Q: Is fat in the raw food diet bad?
A: The issue is not about whether fats are good or bad, whether they are important for hormone production or whatever. All nutrients have uses. The issue is more basic.
Those substances influences and conditions that are harmful to us are harmful regardless of the dose. Those that are beneficial to us are only beneficial in moderation.
The problem with high fat consumption, as far as I can tell (besides the health issues associated with excess fat in the diet) is that one cannot possibly consume enough calories from carbohydrates in order to be properly fueled. This leads to a situation where it is likely that the person will be underactive, leading to a reduction in calorie intake or a weight gain. Either way, we become even less active, consume fewer calories, etc.
As has been discussed many times in past, it is impossible for a sedentary person to be well nourished. This all leads to the consumption of massive quantities of supplements in an effort to support our otherwise inadequate diet.
Therefore, when the proponents of the high fat raw diet can honestly tell me that they find no use for any supplements of any kind because the diet is totally nutritionally adequate, I will give a rethink to this approach.
Q: How do I get a positive fasting experience?
A: A positive fasting experience is the responsibility of the fasting supervisor. Supplying an appropriate location, suitable weather conditions (temperature, humidity, etc), peaceful clean environment, and supportive atmosphere is important. Providing ongoing education, assessments, and motivation are all aspects of a positive fast that fall on the supervisor.
The biggest obstacle to the positive fasting experience has been, in my opinion, fear of fasting. More fasts are not undertaken or end prematurely because of unfounded fears. An experienced supervisor can allay those fears while assessing for true medical emergencies. For those who fast anyway, the biggest obstacle to an overall positive fasting experience is almost always in the breaking of the fast. Breaking the fast is extremely challenging. This is when the fasting supervisor really earns his or her respect.
I recommend that people allow a recovery period roughly equal to the length of the fast. E.g., a two-week fast should be followed by two weeks of recovery, plus or minus a few days based on the needs of the individual.
* WORDS OF WISDOM *
The greatest thing in life is not to make money, but to raise ourselves to our highest state of physical, mental and moral excellentce; to call out the hidden beauties of our nature; and to make ourselves attractive and helpful, instead of repellent and unsympathetic.
Only in the garden and orchard is man truly at home. Picture to yourself cherry trees with boughs so laden that they bend under their burden of fruit, red, white and black raspberries, strawberries blackberries, dewberries, the delightful odors of which occasion the expansion of the nostrils; peach trees laden with luscious fruit; the orange tree with its golden berriesall these give promise of luxuriant living. Such sights give the mind an enlarged view of the comfort one may gain from a simple life in the garden and orchard away from the smoke and fumes, the maddening rush and deafening noise of the crowded city. They bring to us a realization of the wisdom of the ancient writer who placed man at home among the trees of the garden as their tender and protector.
- Dr. Herbert M. Shelton from Human Beauty its Culture and Hygiene (out of print)

Our quality of health and life and our survival ultimately come down to how well we attune our awareness to our senses and heed their messages. Our senses are our guardian angels, providing perfect instructions on what to do to cultivate wellness. When we need help and are not clear about what to do, we need to tune in and receive the wisdom from within. Well get the results we want if we slow down, listen in silence and take life slowly and consciously. Regardless of our current state of health, it is always a good practice to sit and tune in for at least 20 minutes each day. There is much wonderful information to be gleaned about ourselves, and the more we know and the more health-minded we become, the healthier we become and remain. Health-building is a sensual process of practicing good habits.
