Sunshine in Sickness
by Dr. Robert Sniadach
<rwsniadach@transformationinstitute.org>
It has been shown that after a fast or any wasting illness, obtaining sufficient sunshine will enable the body to build higher quality flesh. It will also enable the body to most efficiently digest and assimilate food. This is not to imply that we should wait to become sick to make use of the sun's rays. The sun is not a therapeutic agent; it is a basic essential of good health and nutrition. Sunlight is of value in all states and conditions of the body and in all stages of development. Its importance must be relegated to that of hygiene, and it should not be thought of as a specific "cure" for a disease condition.
Sunlight plays a great role in proper bone development. This is due to the fact that only through the aid of sunlight, particularly the ultraviolet rays, may the laying down and fixation of the calcium and phosphorus salts be accomplished in an ideal fashion as to make for the transformation of cartilage into bone. On the other hand, when insufficient sunlight is obtained, the result is defective, misshapen, brittle and easily broken bones, a condition known as rickets.
Sunlight also proves invaluable in cases of glandular inactivity, favorably affecting irregularities of ovulation, pubertal difficulties and impotency. Acne, a condition representing a glandular disturbance of the skin, is also noticeably aided by sunlight, as is the condition of psoriasis. Also, as sunshine aids in increasing the coagulating power of the blood, it is of inestimable value to sufferers from hemorrhage disorders. Additionally, if cautiously applied, the sunbath can be very valuable in some nervous affections.
Solar rays also have regulating effects on microorganisms. An antibiotic and antiviral effect has been noted. In fact, sunlight and concentrated doses of specific light wavelengths were being aggressively used to deal with infectious diseases prior to the discovery of sulfa drugs and other chemical antibiotics. Soon thereafter these light therapies fell into disuse.
The Sunbath
Sunbaths play a vital role in the life processes of human nutrition, the tanning process being coincident with them. There is a tendency to overexpose the skin to acquire a "good tan," and this should be avoided, as it will enervate the body, lessening the value of the sunbath.
The untanned body should begin with exposure to the solar rays of about ten minutes a day and increase gradually until an hour or more may be taken without harm. Too much sun will result in restlessness and decreased nerve tone. Generally, additional precaution must be taken by blond and red-haired people, as they do not pigment as readily as dark-haired people. Heliophobes, those individuals who redden and blister and are cautioned to stay out of the sun, should still take sunbaths but do so for short periods during the early morning or late afternoon hours to avoid large amounts of ultraviolet rays.
The sunbath should be taken in an entirely nude state or with scanty attire, preferably without glasses or hats, as the eyes and hair also benefit. Sunglasses render the eyes more sensitive to the sunlight and ultimately impair the vision. It is also known that sunlight accelerates the growth of hair.
Suntan lotion or olive oil on the skin is unnecessary and should not be used. These will prevent all the ultraviolet rays from being absorbed and will inhibit the oil-secreting glands of the body from working properly. They will not prevent the injurious effects of excessive sunbathing, nor will they provide for a uniform tan. Remember, it is not mere tanning that we seek, but a general revitalizing of the entire organism, not confined to the skin alone.
If the sunbath is taken at the beach, additional caution must be exercised, as the reflection from the sand and water cause more sun rays to strike the body. Thus, burning will result more quickly. Neither a thin haze over the sun nor a cool breeze will prevent the ultraviolet rays from reaching us. It is important to understand in this context that it is not the sun's heat from which we benefit (except secondarily on a cold day), but rather its light. The hot sun is very exhausting and should be avoided, and like other animals we should instinctively seek the shade at these times.
Those people living in colder climates must take advantage of the warmer months to secure an ample supply of sun-made reserves to carry them through sunless periods. This is not to say that the body stores up sunshine, but rather it stores up substances produced with the aid of sunshine to be used in times of stringency. Along with vitamin D, there are likely other materials that are synthesized in the body with the aid of the sun's rays. These body reserves will be adequate as long as the general mode of living throughout the year is not enervating. All forms of excesses, dissipation of the emotions, lack of rest and sleep, sexual excesses, overwork and/or an improper diet will waste these reserves.
Some additional precautions should be noted in the case of invalids or generally weak individuals. If the sunbath leaves the person feeling weak or depressed or with an increase in any of his/her symptoms, then it has been overdone. Fever, headache, weariness, loss of appetite and sleeplessness may all be considered signs of excess. In those individuals suffering from asthma or tuberculosis, a difficulty in breathing may be experienced. Nervous patients may not be able to sleep due to a stimulating effect caused by too much sun. The end result for securing the sunbath should be to produce a better feeling in the individual, not worse. A person's need for sunlight is dependent upon their ability to make use of these light rays. Overindulgence of the sunbath will lend to additional enervation and is damaging.
It is best to gradually increase one's exposure to the suns rays and at the same time pay close attention to the body's natural signals that enough exposure has been taken. These signals include restlessness, increased perspiration due to overheating, and possibly mental confusion, i.e. feeling "spaced out". The goal of the sunbath is to be a soothing and pleasurable experience that does not overextend the body's ability to nourish itself with the sun's energies. Just as with food nutrition, moderation, well within one's capabilities, is ideal. Too much, even if no outward damage to the skin is seen, is harmful.

The Seven Stages of Disease
by Dr. Robert Sniadach
<rwsniadach@transformationinstitute.org>
There are seven stages of disease. The underlying cause of disease in all stages is
enervation and subsequent toxicosis.
1. Enervation
This first stage is called enervation. Most people call it nervous exhaustion, or just plain tired and run down. Enervation is a state in which the body is either not generating sufficient vital energy for the tasks the body must perform, or the tasks the body must perform may be greater than the normal vital energy supply can cope with. In any event, the body becomes impaired, and an impaired body generates less vital energy if the conditions of overwork or non-regeneration persist. The great revitalizer is sleep, for sleep regenerates vital energy. Insufficient sleep and rest are the primary causes of enervation. Once enervation exists, all body functions are debilitated and diminished. This can quickly lead to:
2. Toxicosis
When toxic substances from whatever source saturate the blood and tissues, the lymph system and interstitial fluids, then the condition of toxicosis exists. Living cells are surrounded by waste products - garbage. Tissue and blood saturation with toxic materials can be caused by both internally generated wastes and pollutants taken in from the outside which the body has not been able to eject from its domain. Intoxication occurs when we overload the body with toxic materials from the outside, or we fail to observe our capacities, and overwork, get insufficient sleep, or are subjected to great stress, or when any number of other factors deplete the body of vital energy or prevent its sufficient regeneration. For instance, stresses, emotional shocks, or traumatic experiences can drain our bodies of vital energy very quickly. Often toxicosis creates feelings of unease, vague discomfort and subtle negative emotional states. At some level of intoxication we begin to experience the next stage of disease which is called:
3. Irritation
Irritation results from toxic materials being sensed by our nervous system. Any toxic material, be it salt, caffeine, condiments or external chemicals will irritate or stimulate. This is a condition wherein the body sets in force its defensive mechanisms and accelerates its internal activities. This might well be likened to an alarm aboard ship where all hands are summoned. A frenzy of activity results in a bout with enemy forces. Unfortunately, this often temporarily makes us feel good or hyperactive or even euphoric. It is distressing to see a euphoric condition arise out of a situation that is damaging to the organism. If the causes of enervation/intoxication/irritation remain in force and the body cant cope with it the body initiates a responsive crisis called:
4. Inflammation
This is usually the stage in which physicians recognize pathology. It is the stage where sufferers are keenly aware of a problem, for it involves pain. As well, it involves bodily redirection of vital energies. The intestinal tract is closed down. Energy that would normally be available for digestive activity is preempted and redirected to the massive effort to cope with a severe condition of intoxication. Energy is also redirected from use by the muscles. There is little or no desire to be active; all sensibilities demand that you sleep and rest. Lest the integrity of the organism be dealt a mortal blow or become crippled, the body musters its all to the emergency.
In inflammation, the toxicants have usually been concentrated in an organ or area for a massive expulsive effort. The area becomes inflamed due to the constant irritation of the toxic materials. When inflammation exists we are said to have an itis, appendicitis, tonsillitis, sinusitis, hepatitis, or nephritis for example. The names of itises are usually after the organ or tissue area that is inflamed. Thus if we have a cold we have rhinitis. If we have inflammation of the sinus cavities we have sinusitis. If we have inflammation of bronchial tissue we have either bronchitis or asthma. And so it goes. We have these peculiar pathologies because in each case the body elected to eliminate the extraordinary toxic load through the organ affected. For instance, asthma exists because the body has selected the bronchi as an outlet for toxic materials. The condition is chronic because the toxic condition is unceasing. While the sufferer continues to intoxicate himself or herself, the body continues to eliminate the overload through the bronchi or alveolar tissue.
Why does the body choose one site or another for elimination? There are many variables to consider to answer this question. There is the predisposing genetic constitution that you are born with. Some of us can handle increased elimination through normal channels, while others do not have this capacity and the body has to rid itself of the extra poisons through the skin via pimples, rashes, etc. Also we must consider that the type of toxic material being eliminated will tend to be detoxified by one or more particular organs. Also the outlet that is most convenient for excretion, nose, eyes ears, throat, lungs, bladder, rectum, etc. will be utilized to expel the morbid material.
Inflammation or fever is a body crisis response to a life-threatening situation. The body and the body alone creates the fever. It is an evidence or symptom of increased and intense body activities directed at cleansing and repair. The extraordinary energies employed for a fever are at the expense of energies normally involved in digestion, work or play, thinking and seeing, etc. Fever is a healing activity. The idea of suppressing it is equivalent to hitting a drowning man over the head so he'll stop struggling. For instance, if rhinitis or influenza sufferers are drugged, it amounts to hitting the body's healer over the head. Thus, the eliminative effort is suppressed, and the toxicity increases until other organs, usually the lungs, become saturated - not only with the toxicity but the drugs administered as well. When body vitality reasserts itself a condition known as pneumonia is likely to result. Inflammation is the fourth stage of disease and is the bodys most intense effort to cleanse and restore itself. The next stage of disease is destructive and degenerative. It will result if the causes of general body intoxication are continued.
5. Ulceration
Ulceration means that a staggering amount of cells and tissue structures are being destroyed. Physiological systems are wiped out due to the body's inability to live in an unceasing toxic media. Where tissue is destroyed there remains a void. An example is a canker sore of the mouth. Lesions or ulcers can occur in other areas of the body also. These conditions are often intensely painful, for there are exposed nerves. While the body may use an ulcer as an outlet for extraordinary toxic buildup thereby relieving itself, it will heal the ulcer if causes are discontinued, or if the toxicity level is significantly lowered. This process of repairing the damage is like patching up pants with holes in them. This patching up process is called induration.
6. Induration
Induration is a hardening of tissue or the filling in of tissue vacancy with hard tissue. Scarring is a form of induration. But in this stage of disease, there is direction and purpose in hardening. The space is filled, and the toxic materials that threaten bodily integrity are encapsulated in a sac of hardened tissue. The ulcer and the toxic materials are sealed off by the hardening of the tissue around them. This is a way of quarantining the toxic materials, often called tumor formation. It is this condition that is often diagnosed as cancer when in fact no cancer exists. Induration is the last stage during which the body exerts intelligent control. Should the pathogenic practices which brought matters to this stage be continued, cells and tissue systems go wild. They survive as best they can on their own. Cells become parasitic - living off the nutrients they can obtain from the lymph fluid but contributing nothing to the body economy. They have become disorganized. Their genetic encoding has been altered by the poisons. Thus, they are not capable of intelligent normal organized action within the context of a vital economy. When cells go wild in this manner, the condition is called cancer.
7. Cancer
The endpoint of the evolution of disease is cancer. It is the last stage of disease and is usually fatal, especially if the causes that brought it about are continued. Cessation of causes and indulgence of healthful practices may arrest it, for they can so revitalize the body that they may even destroy the cancer cells. It's all relative. Cancer cells live in a hostile environment but still divide and flourish as long as nutrients are available to them. Cancer cells may be regarded as cells that have become independent and have reverted to the status of uncontrolled primitive cells -- cells that live entirely on their own as do protozoa. These stages of disease are quite distinct in their characters, yet the lines are more or less arbitrarily drawn. This often happens in attempts at categorization where one form evolves into another. The dividing lines have no clear-cut delineation.
People sometimes ask when cancer begins. Natural Hygienists say that it begins with the first cold or rash of childhood. The first crisis a baby endures begins the pathological chain that leads to cancer. This evolutionary chain begins then because the phenomenon of life is one constant violation of the laws of life from beginning to end.

What are varicose veins?
The scientific term used to describe varicose veins is variscosity. With each beat of the heart the circulating blood is sent on its way through the vessels. Some of these vessels (arteries and arterioles) carry oxygenated blood while others (veins and venules) carry deoxygenated blood. The tiniest blood vessels of all, known as the capillaries, carry both. Arteries and arterioles have muscular walls that contract and squeeze the circulating blood around the body.
Veins function in a different way from arteries. Instead of having muscular walls, veins have the equivalent of one-way valves, at regular intervals along their length. Blood enters each section of the vein through one of these valves, which then shuts behind it. The blood is then retained there just a moment before the force of the circulating blood sends it on its way again through the next valve. Sometimes, for various reasons, the valves do not function properly and blood drops back in to the preceding section of the vein. This can cause that section to become overfilled with blood with the result that the walls of the vein become stretched. This can result in a permanent bulging in that part of the vein.
What causes varicose veins?
The cause of malfunctioning valves is usually excessive pressure of blood against the thin walls of the veins. This can result in them becoming over stretched and misshapen. Once this has happened the valves no longer close properly.
Anything that reduces the circulation, such as crossing the legs or wearing tight bands of clothing can cause a build up of pressure in isolated sections of the veins.
Standing for long periods of time can result in blood accumulating in the lower legs as a result of gravitational pull. This can also cause variscosity. The old saying never stand when you can sit or sit when you can walk is valuable advice.
During pregnancy the weight of the uterus exerts pressure on the femoral veins and the vena cava (the primary vein that returns blood from the lower extremities to the heart). The development of variscosity of the legs and/or the vulva during pregnancy is very common. In most cases the veins return to normal after delivery.
A high level of estrogen has also been identified as a cause of varicose veins, which explains why many women on a high fat diet (which stimulates the production of estrogen) suffer from this condition.
Constipation is another cause of variscosity. The straining involved in passing hard stools puts tremendous pressure on the veins of the legs and rectum. This is made worse by extended periods of time spent sitting on the toilet as in that position the circulation in the legs is also reduced. Hemorrhoids (variscosity of the vessels of the anus and lower rectum) are a common result of chronic constipation.
An important consideration is the quality of a persons blood vessels in general. Unless they are eating a high fruit diet they will have inadequate supply of a vital nutrient called capillary fragility factor (CFF). CFF is part of the C complex and is necessary for healthy and elastic blood vessels. Citrus fruits and berries are especially high in this nutrient.
What are the health implications of varicose veins?
Varicose veins can be considered unsightly. They can also result in an uncomfortable feeling of heaviness and aching in the affected body part. The skin in the area can become scaly and itchy. If the variscosity has occurred in the legs cramping (especially at night) and leg ulcers are both possible outcomes. Phlebitis (inflammation of the vein) and blood clots can occur too.
How can they be prevented?
In order to prevent variscosity occurring the following recommendations are offered:
1. Avoid standing for extended periods of time. If this is unavoidable regularly move your lower legs in some way (such as gently walking on the spot).
Note: The soleus muscles of the lower legs are so efficient at assisting in the movement of blood back up to the heart that they are referred to as the second heart.
2. If you are pregnant sleep on your left side to relieve pressure on the vena cava.
3. Avoid tight clothing that restricts the blood circulation.
4. Avoid getting constipated by eating a healthy diet, exercising, keeping hydrated and sufficiently slept.
5. Eat abundantly of fruits rich in C complex such as citrus fruits and berries.
6. Eat a low fat diet .
Can anything be done if a person already has them?
There are essentially two approaches to intervention. The options are injections or surgery.
Sclerotherapy describes the injecting of an irritating substance (usually a strong saline solution) into the affected vein. This results in the formation of a clot that then closes off that vein so that it can no longer be used by the body. This is has dangerous implications as the clot can potentially break away and travel independently downstream causing undesirable blockages elsewhere. For this reason tight bandages, known as compression bandages, are worn from the site of the treated vein right down to the toes. These bandages must remain in place for about three weeks.
Surgery performed to remove varicose veins is referred to as stripping. It is usually done under general anesthetic. The procedure involves the threading of a wire down the length of the affected vein which is achieved my making numerous incisions. The entire vein is then removed from the body. Support stockings are worn for several weeks post operatively to prevent bleeding.
Regardless of the intervention taken, unless the causes of variscosity are removed from the diet and lifestyle the problem will soon appear in other veins.

A Closer Look at Vitamin B-12
by Dr. Douglas Graham
<foodnsport@aol.com>
Some authorities recommend B-12 supplements in part, it would seem, because of deficiencies seen in his practice from long time vegans. Every study I can find seems to show that people who do not supplement may do fine for years or even decades, but eventually they develop symptoms that may be irreversible.
"Normal" B-12 values are determined from taking B-12 levels from the "standing population." Since most refined grain products are dosed with B-12 and most people eat refined grain products at almost every meal, it is safe to say that the standing population is supplementing their diet with B-12 at almost every meal. Most flesh eaters are getting their B-12 from the refined carbohydrate foods they consume. Pasta, cereal, bread and other similar foods are "enriched" with B-12. Assimilating B-12 from an outside source is not wrong for the body. If you will notice, the body is redundant with backup systems for its every function. Therefore, what is considered the norm for B-12 levels is actually a false high, as it represents a level achieved through daily supplementation.
B-12 sufficiency is stress related, among other things. Experience high stress and B-12 needs increase dramatically. B12 deficiency is common in omnivores, and not specific to vegans. Caloronutrient ratio also affects B-12 levels, for a variety of reasons. Eat a diet high in fat and you increase the likelihood of B-12 deficiency. Raw fooders eat, on average, 50% more of their calories from fat than do folks on the SAD. Animals eat B-12 as they often eat dirt with their food. They produce B-12 in their guts, too. So eating the animal could provide some B-12, but I wouldn't count on it.
The extremely high-fat raw diet that some raw food movement leaders will likely lead to B-12 deficiencies. I do not recommend such a diet, nor do most of the mainstream, vegetarian, vegan, or raw health experts, all of whom recommend an extremely low-fat diet where fruits and vegetables make up a larger percentage of total foods consumed.
I do not supplement myself, nor do I recommend that anyone supplement. I would not withhold supplements from someone suffering from a deficiency, but even then I would look into the cause of the deficiency and attempt to remove the cause rather than rely upon a lifetime of supplementation.

Empowered For Life With Natural Hygiene
by David Klein
<dave@livingnutrition.com>
With the principles of Natural Hygiene down solid in our beliefs and our lifestyle practices, we are empowered to live freely and joyfully free of fear of disease and medical expenses, and full of a comforting and elevating sense of security. The principles of sovereign self-healing, healthcare, and Hygienic living are extremely contrary to standard modern thinking, yet they are so simple that few will believe the power of Natural Hygiene. A proper sufficient Hygienic education is what is needed to get started, and that can cost only $0 to $25 and yield a lifetime of total health empowerment, assuring no or short-lived sickness, no health insurance needs, no doctor needs, no contagion worries, no dietary deficiency worries, no fear of dying from degenerative or other killer diseases, and no fear becoming infirm and incapacitated as we age. As we Hygienists say, glorious disease-free health is our birthright, and a long healthy life is possible if we understand the principles of Hygienic living and live by them, all of the time.
A while after I healed up from a long debilitating illness via Natural Hygiene, Dr. Laurence Galant, my Hygiene coach, told me that with my knowledge, some day people will flock to me because of the rare, empowering, liberating information I hold. I was a bit stupefied I could not see it happening. But Laurence was right! Hygiene is not magic, but the good things it brings to life seem like magic! And one does not have to be a scientist and learn complicated science or fancy esoteric principles. No! Natural Hygiene is simple and easy so easy that young children can fully understand it and put it in to practice with high efficacy. Really, it takes unlearning most of the modern false notions about disease, nutrition and treatments. Natural is the first word in Natural Hygiene, and the natural order of life affirms that health was meant to be easy and it is if we understand and fully embrace Hygiene.
When fully embraced and applied properly, Natural Hygiene does empower us to live in near-perfect health and with the lofty joy that naturally attends mind-body-soul liberation. As modern beings it is a challenge to fashion a lifestyle which supports true health, but it can be done. It may take years to get there, but the journey is worth it. Its the ultimate ideal and it is a practical ideal. If this feels daunting, the good news is that the Healthful Living International community of friends are all in the same boat and we all love to support each other in realizing our loftiest goals.
As Hygienists do hold extremely rare information, empowering and enlivening information, and because of this others feel uncomfortable. But, lets keep fully empowered and confident and learn effective ways to show and present the Natural Hygiene way to our friends and family and the world, and expand Hygienic knowledge as far as it needs to go. Our world is suffering for lack of Hygienic wisdom, and our good intentions can make a difference. Goodness, wisdom and service are Hygienic virtues which we can each bring to our world. Lets gather in Fort Lauderdale in August with our friends and family too and share in the vibes of Hygienic vitality and Earth compassion. In synergy there is magic. In compassion, wisdom and love there is the transformational power of goodness. And the world needs us.
