Self Healing Power!
By Dr. Herbert M. Shelton, T. C. Fry and David Klein
Living Nutrition Publications, Sebastopol, California
96 pages; large format.
Sold by Living Nutrition for $10.00 at http://www.livingnutrition.com/bookstore.html
Review by Justin P. Lelia

Self Healing Power is a compendium of some of the writings of the late T. C. Fry and Dr. Herbert Shelton, put together by David Klein. These authors dedicated their lives to sharing the concepts and joys of Natural Hygiene–an ultraconservative health science. Yet, David hasn’t merely arranged a hodgepodge of essays–instead, he has constructed a thought-provoking teaching rivaling that of his magazine, Living Nutrition.

In the introduction and first chapter, T. C. Fry marvels at the role of one single cell and the complexity with which trillions of cells organize to make up just one human body. My mind was eased by his admission: "We do not have to master a detailed knowledge of our body to harness the great power within." We have to accept and respect the manner and time in which the body repairs itself. And most importantly, we must not attempt to manipulate or stimulate the healing process with drugs or the other modalities that may be offered to us.

As he has practiced Natural Hygiene for almost two decades, David understands the difficulty most people have in accepting that there are no "cures" or "quick fixes" for disease. Therefore, he has selected a special Dr. Shelton essay, Self-Mastery Brings Greater Joys, to inspire patience. Dr. Shelton writes that correct living is the key to personal freedom and we need not be unhappy about of all the new lifestyle restrictions of Hygiene. "If we are to achieve true greatness, we must learn to accept the restraints as an integral part of a philosophy of life which will lift us to higher planes of living…Let us keep our eyes on our great objectives, and the trivial things that we pass up as we go ahead will not be missed by us." This chapter presents Dr. Shelton's recognition of the positive self-image we must cultivate in order to develop new habits.

David has also included comprehensible and scientific writings by Dr. Shelton. For example, chapter six, Life’s Engineering, illustrates the amazing bodily processes that spring into action in cases of injury or disease, using detailed examples of a fractured bone, a splinter, appendicitis, gallstones, tumors and other relevant emergencies. Dr. Shelton describes situations where medical modalities only impede the healing process. This chapter reads like a well-written textbook, illustrating the body’s objectives, and simultaneously influencing us to trust our innate healing power.

Self Healing Power shines because it is edited to present timeless Hygienic themes that are frequently overlooked. T. C. Fry's thought-provoking essay, "Is Health a Moral Issue?" at the finale, is an example. He writes that "even if it seems onerous and burdensome" to live healthfully, we must continue because we owe it to humanity. Indeed, Self Healing Power is not an ordinary self-help book, treating raw foods, fasting, or spirituality as the panacea for our ills. Instead, it teaches us why these things are valuable and moral practices.

New raw fooder asks:
“Why am I always so cold now?”

by Dr. Douglas Graham
<foodnsport@aol.com>

Cold is a relative term. We live in a world where the thermostat is set for the comfort of those eating the Standard Westernized Diet. Their body temperature averages 98.6 oF. Raw fooders average closer to 93 oF. Take your temperature first thing in the morning and see for yourself.

This huge disparity often leaves you cold for the first year or two of raw, until you have adapted to the new body temperature. I no longer suffer the cold, though I remember when I did.

If you would like not to suffer this cold feeling, eat foods or combinations that are difficult to digest. Of course, your health will suffer in countless other ways, but you too can suffer from the fever that most cooked fooders experience all of the time and no longer feel cold. (According to medical experts, 99 oF is a fever and 98.6 oF is normal. These two numbers are too close for comfort. Personally, I believe that anything over 98 oF is fever.)
For this winter, I suggest that you simply plan on wearing an extra layer or two compared to what you would think of as normal. You are living in a world dominated by cooked eaters, and must accommodate yourself to the temperatures that they find normal, for the most part. As your health and vitality build, you will find yourself becoming ever more temperature-tolerant.

Is a Little Celtic Sea Salt Harmless?

by Dr. Douglas Graham
<foodnsport@aol.com>

Salt does not add flavor to food. It reduces flavor. Salt deadens taste buds to anything and everything except the taste of more salt. It deadens our ability to sense sweet, sour and bitter. This is why salt users will often say that "food has no flavor without salt". There is a powerful dehydrating impact upon the body from the consumption of even a small amount of refined salt. It is said that in China people eat just an ounce of salt to commit suicide.

Those substances that are beneficial are only beneficial in moderation, whereas those that are harmful are harmful regardless of dose. We could not sensibly argue that tobacco, botulism or heroin are good for us as long as we didn't use them excessively.

As for obtaining minerals from salt is basically a myth. Minerals must be converted to a bioavailable form in order to be utilized, and this action is done by the bacteria that live on plant root hairs. We obtain our minerals from eating plants. While it is true that minerals in ionic form, such as sodium, can be utilized by the body, it is a rare person indeed who suffers from a lack of sodium. Usually the opposite is more true: people suffer from excessive sodium intake.

Women’s Health Issues - You Questions Answered

by Prof. Rozalind Gruben
<healthyunlimited@aol.com>

If you have any questions related to women’s heath
please e-mail them directly to Rozalind at healthyunlimited@aol.com.

Q: Why do women experience excess facial hair as they grow older?

A: The condition whereby coarse hairs grow on the chin and sometimes upper back, upper abdomen or chest is referred to as hirsutism. It is usually caused hyperandrogenism (an excess of specific hormones called androgens). Certain drugs also cause hirsutism, these include the past use of contraceptive drugs that contain progestins. Progestins can have androgenic effects. A
progestins named norgestrel and has an especially potent effect in this way. The drug danazol, routinely prescribed for endometriosis also causes excess androgens in the body and consequently hirsutusm.

The excess growth of regular soft hair on the arms, legs and scalp is a condition known as hypertrichosis. There are many drugs that cause this to occur including anti-convulsants, anti-hypertensive medications and tranquilizers. Hypertrichosis can also be a sign of dermatomyositis (a condition of the connective tissue) or by an elevated blood component porphyrin. In rare cases problems with severe excess body hair can be a sign of a tumor of the adrenals or ovaries.

As so many people have taken so many drugs is their lives and the fact that older people are typically consuming no less than sixteen different medications per week it is of little surprise that these sorts of problems with body hair occur.

For the majority, plucking out the few that appear and focusing on living as healthfully as possible is the best, and most simple, answer.

Q: What kind of cream would you recommend for dry skin and lips due to excessively dry weather?

If the climate is excessively dry the body dehydrates at an accelerated rate. General consistent dehydration of the organism can result in dry skin. The monitoring of a person's urine flow is the most accurate method of ascertaining if they need to increase their water intake. If the urine is being passed in moderate amounts 8 or more times in every 24 hours then the person is sufficiently hydrated. In cases where the body is evidently well hydrated but the skin dry then regularly raising the body temperature via exercise, so as to create moistness on the skin, is helpful. In addition the increase in blood circulation as a result of exercise will assist in improving and maintaining healthy skin. Anything covered over the skin will help to minimize evaporation from it and thus reduce dryness. This can be in the form of clothing, such as socks on dry feet, or in the form of oil. Jojoba oil mixed with vitamin E is excellent for the job. If lips become sore and cracked from dryness covering them with a non-pertroleum lip balm is helpful. Dryness of the skin can be a sign of many things including vitamin deficiencies. The increasing of fresh raw fruit in the diet is the best assurance against such problems.

The Best Time to Eat Bananas

by Dr. Douglas Graham
<foodnsport@aol.com>

The window for bananas, as for most fruit, is actually shorter than we may think. For only when the fruit is fully ripe, but not yet rotten, is it truly in its prime. Like a moon going full for just a moment in its unending cycle, fruit is only perfectly ripe for a very brief period. Before it reaches full ripeness, many of the fruit's nutrients are not fully set or are not fully accessible. After peak ripeness, the fruit begins to rot via fermentation. Fortunately for us, we can sense fermentation by the smell, the feel, the look and the taste of most fruits.

Bananas do have a shorter window of "acceptable ripeness" than most commercial fruits. Still, that window is easily a week long, if the bananas are stored at the correct temperature: in the 50's or 60's. At warmer temperatures, they will ripen more rapidly. When storage temperatures climb into the high 80's, bananas can go from inedibly unripe to overripe in 2 to 3 days. Bananas are also affected by the amount of fresh air they receive, ripening more slowly if the air around them is circulating. Bananas produce their own ethylene gas, which is the crucial element in their ripening process.

Prison of the Intellect

Transcribed from a lecture by Deepak Chopra,
based upon: The Ancient Yoga Sutras of Patanjali

Purification, Refinement, Surrender to Pure Unbounded Consciousness –These are the practical steps on the path to Knowledge. They nourish the state of Samadhi, and weaken the causes of suffering.

The causes of suffering are Five:
1. Ignorance of our Real Nature.
2. Egoism.
3. Attachment.
4. Aversion.
5. The Fear of Death, which is the mistake of the intellect.

Ignorance of our real nature is the cause of the first four, whether they are dormant, weak, suspended or fully active. Ignorance is the failure to discriminate between the permanent and the impermanent; the pure and the impure; bliss and suffering; the self and the non-self.

Egoism, the limiting sense of I, results from the individual’s intellect attributing the power of consciousness to a limited self.

Attachment is object referral–clinging to pleasure.

Aversion is object referral–clinging to pain.

The fear of death is a spontaneous feeling rooted deeply within us, as a result of the mistake of the intellect.

The subtle causes of suffering are destroyed when the mind merges back into the unmanifest. The gross effects of suffering are destroyed through transcendence–through meditation.

The impression of past action stored deep in the mind are the seeds of desire. They ripen into action in many seen and unseen ways. As long as action leaves its seed in the mind, this seed will grow generating more desires, more action, more experiences.

In these, too, the fruit of incorrect action is sorrow, the fruit of correct action is joy.

Life is uncertain; change causes fear; and latent impressions bring pain. All indeed is suffering to he who is trapped in the prison of the intellect. But the suffering that is yet to come can, and should be averted.

The cause of the suffering is that the unbounded Self is overshadowed by the world. This world is the play of the guna’s–the universal energies of light, motion and mass. They take form as the elements and the senses. The purpose of the world is to provide us with experience, and thus to lead us to freedom.

The guna’s operate on various levels–gross, subtle, causal, unmanifest. But the Self is boundless; unbounded. It is the pure consciousness that illuminates the contents and animates the mind. It is only for the sake of the Self that this world exists. The limitations of the world disappear for one who knows the Self. The Self is obscured by the world in order that the reality of both may be discovered.

It is ignorance of our real nature that causes the self to be obscured. When ignorance is destroyed, the unbounded, free nature of the Self is discovered. This freedom, this liberation, is enlightenment.

The five Laws of Life are:
1. Non-Violence.
2. Truthfulness.
3. Integrity.
4. Purity.
5. Self-Referral.

These Laws are universal, unaffected by time, space, place of birth or circumstance–together they constitute the Great Law of Life.

The five Rules of Living are:
1. Simplicity.
2. Contentment.
3. Purification.
4. Refinement.
5. Surrender to the infinite, unbounded pure consciousness.

Negative feelings, such as violence, are damaging to life, whether we act upon them ourselves, or cause or condone them in others. They are born of greed, anger or delusion. They may be slight, moderate or intense. Their fruit is endless ignorance and suffering. To remember this is to cultivate the opposite. When we are firmly established in non-violence, all beings around us cease to feel hostility.

When we are firmly established in truthfulness, action accomplishes its desired end.

When we are firmly established in integrity, all riches present themselves freely.

When we are firmly established in the Self, the nature and purpose of existence is undisturbed, and great power is generated.

Simplicity destroys object referral, and brings freedom. Purity of the mind, cheerfulness, mastery of the senses, one-pointedness and fitness for self-realization follow.

From contentment, unsurpassed happiness is gained. By purification, the body and the senses are perfected.

Refinement brings communion with the spirit that animates everything in existence.

Anything and everything in existence can be mastered when all effort is relaxed, and the mind is absorbed in the infinite, unbounded nature of pure consciousness.

And then we are no longer upset by the play of opposites, and life is lived in freedom and joy.

The Most Ecologically Positive Diet:
How Raw Food Eating Can Regenerate the Earth

by Don Weaver
<earthdon@yahoo.com>

(From the forthcoming Living Nutrition Magazine vol. 15)

"Lack of heart, lack of generosity, is the real disease of our world." - Bernard Moitessier

A serious condition of human-environment imbalance existed when "Earth Day" began in 1970, because most of the world's four billion inhabitants lacked understanding of our interconnected planetary life-support systems. Thirty-three years of ecological education later, we've learned much about the effect of our actions on the Biosphere, yet a majority of now 6.3 billion continue living in ecologically unhealthful and destructive ways. Is this rational? Enlightened? Natural to our species, Homo sapiens, which means "Wise man"? I say NO!

We're now taking about 120% of what the Biosphere produces annually. Before we push irreversibly beyond Earth's ecological capacity to support us and 10-30 million other species, let's
explore what we can do to transform practices and reverse trends now killing us and the Earth.

The moral, environmental, and health arguments for adopting vegetarian and vegan diets have been convincingly made in books like John Robbins' Diet For A New America, The Food Revolution, and Howard Lyman's Mad Cowboy: Plain Truth From the Cattle Rancher Who Won't Eat Meat. Yet these valuable books have not explored how raw (uncooked) vegan diets can help propel a great leap forward for those seeking to minimize harm and maximize benefit to the Earth. Books on raw and eco-conscious eating are proliferating, and many teach important and inspirational facts on the connection between a raw diet and a healthier environment. It would take a book to detail all the benefits, so let's just briefly review the primary problems and the solutions available now via raw, organic, vegan diet choices.

1. Soil Depletion/Malnutrition/Famine. We can view this as one mega-problem and probably most
critical: The cumulative effects of 11,000 years of depletion of soil minerals and organic matter have been vastly accelerated by the rapacious chemical-forcing and fertility-mining practices of "modern" agribusiness. A raw, organic vegan diet sets new standards for quality and the methods for its attainment! If the majority of people adopted this diet, imagine the drastically increased demand for high-quality organic produce! When farmers remineralize soils with mixed rock powder and plant-derived compost, avoiding the byproducts of animal enslavement and slaughterhouses, it lays the biological foundation for a truly regenerative, abundant, healthful and thriving veganiculture. Visualize the beautiful diversity of gardens, farms, fruitful orchards, and forests rejuvenating so much land now in an ugly, depleted state. This process of regeneration and re-fruition is happening now, insofar as we live as conscious producers and consumers who insist on enlightened care of our small planet–this rare shining jewel in the vast Universe.

2. Human Health. Degeneration/Insanity/Violence/War/Extinction? The worsening cancer epidemic, with 1 of every 2.15 people in America expected to harvest a crop of cancer in their lifetime, stands in stark contrast to Nature's promise of perfect health. This should inspire us to sow the healthiest seeds possible in every aspect of living. Cancer tops a long list of interconnected physical, mental, and spiritual diseases that plague humankind, revealing the extent of our degeneration. Simply observing most people and the daily "news" also reveals this degeneration. A raw, organic, vegan diet–most wisely as part of a complete system of "health by healthful living" such as Natural Hygiene–can supply all the essential nutrients as found in food grown from fertile, mineralized soils, free of the toxic byproducts of animal-based chemical agribusiness and cooking. It can virtually eliminate all disease–starting now–by removing the primary causes: body toxicity and nutritional deficiency.

3. Deforestation/Desertification. The primary causes of deforestation and desertification are land-clearing for cattle raising, use of wood and other biomass as cooking fuel, and the ongoing depletion and dying of soils. A raw vegan diet removes these causes and promotes reforestation and orchard plantings by Nature and "Wise man." Remineralizing new orchards and forests is crucial, as is remineralizing the existing acidified, impoverished late-interglacial forests. Evidence
shows these forests are increasingly stressed and dying from insect and disease epidemics, climate extremes, and forest fires, thus transferring vast amounts of carbon from land to atmosphere...which brings on more climate extremes, more fires like those which burned much
of Southern California, etc.–in short., a cycle of degeneration calling for a generous response of regeneration. See how generosity and regeneration are
related?

4. Air Pollution/CO2 Buildup/Climate Change/Famine. Soil remineralization and reforestation reverses the CO2 flow from soil and plant life! A raw vegan diet hugely reduces energy expenditure and CO2 emission by eliminating demand for cooked foods, which also means elimination of demand for most refrigeration, packaging, and, when we create fertile abundance in bioregions everywhere, most long-distance shipping of food, fiber, and fuel. Naturally, this is wholly preferable to ruining our global climate, whether by "global warming" or–as much evidence is warning us–by an accelerated onset of the next glacial cycle in our current Ice Age.

5. Fossil Fuel/Nuclear Energy Addiction. Soil remineralization, a vital key to successful raw veganiculture, can enable us to grow the biomass/alcohol fuels to meet the saner, reduced demands of a raw, vegan, health-and peace-oriented culture. We can swiftly wean ourselves from our addictions to these ecologically-obsolete energy forms. Up to 2000 farmers per week have been going out of business in the U.S. over the past 25 years, while over a billion dollars per week is spent on oil imports. This is clearly a national and a global tragedy in need of immediate transformation.
.
6. Toxic Waste. A committed, eco-conscious raw vegan lifestyle can minimize toxic waste beginning now, and phase it out soon. As for existing toxic wastes (and human sewage
which is now usually toxic), it has been demonstrated that their microbial decomposition and detoxification is possible, practical, and necessary. Here again the generous feeding of mixed rock dust and organic matter to the microbes will help their proliferation and priceless foundational work.

7. Animal Exploitation/Killing. We can minimize the suffering of exploited animals quickly, and potentially end it entirely, as worldwide compassion and "the Balance of Nature" is restored. To continue needlessly enslaving and killing billions of our fellow creatures each year must surely be intolerable to the compassionate conscience of our awesomely gifted species. Obviously, it is up to me...and you?

The Continuum of Activity and Fasting
by Dr. Douglas Graham

Rest comes in four forms: emotional, physical, physiological and sensory. When a person participates fully in all four, this is referred to as “fasting.” When any of these four areas is partially or completely compromised, it is still partial fasting, or what we refer to as, "resting."

Hence, when desiring to enter into a fast, a person should transition from the normal activities of life by increasing degrees of rest until eventually reaching the state of fasting. These same steps should be gently followed, in reverse, when one is ready to exit the fast.
