DETOXIFICATION SYMPTOMS
or
WHY DO I FEEL SO ROTTEN?

Your body is ALWAYS trying to heal and repair itself, every second of every day of your life.

No exceptions.

Your body is ALWAYS rebuilding itself, replacing old, worn out cells and tissues with new ones.

No exceptions.

Your body is ALWAYS trying to absorb high quality nutrients and eliminate toxic waste material.

No exceptions.

Well, if that is so, then why do I get sick?

Because your inborn health and healing processes are being sabotaged.

But now that I’m doing all these good things for myself, I feel worse! How come?

Pretty simple. Once you start fueling yourself with real nutrients, exercise to get your body moving, and sleep enough to generate the extra energy, your body yells, "Wow, Hallelujah!" and starts rebuilding itself. And when it rebuilds, it gets rid of pockets of toxins and waste materials by dumping them into the bloodstream. Once this gunk's in the bloodstream, you get symptoms. Headaches, nausea, skin rashes, constipation and fatigue are common detoxification symptoms.

Detoxification is the term used for the symptoms - both physical and mental - that may appear when you alter your lifestyle by starting something new and improved, such as a better diet or exercising, or discontinuing a current unhealthy habit, such as eating junk food or drinking coffee.

As you continue on the improved diet and gradually raise the food quality, interesting symptoms begin to appear. Your body begins a process called retracing. It says to itself, “Now we have a chance to get rid of this old garbage and build a beautiful new house. Let's get started immediately. Let's get the sludge moving out of the arteries, veins, and capillaries. These smelly, gassy, brain-stupefying masses plugging up these intestines have been here too long -- out with them! These arthritic deposits in the joints need cleaning up. Let's get these irritating food preservatives, aspirins, sleeping pills, and drugs out of the way, along with these other masses of fat which have made life so burdensome for us for so long. Let's get going till the job is done -- till we have a beautiful house -- and from there on we'll keep it a beautiful model house.”

These toxins being discarded are saving you from more serious disease which will result if you keep them in your body too much longer -- possibly hepatitis, kidney disorders, blood disease, heart disease, arthritis, nerve degeneration or even cancer -- depending upon your hereditary or structural weaknesses. Be happy you're paying your bills now in an easy-payment plan.

How did I get all this toxic debris?

As we live, toxins accumulate in our body. There is the normal amount of wastes created by the cells as normal life processes happen. Some toxic material gets in due to our diet and also due to our polluted environment around us. Of course, our lifestyle also fits in - if you smoke or use alcohol you are accumulating even more toxins. Ideally this garbage gets eliminated immediately. Reality is that some – or even a lot – of this waste matter remains in your body. You were simply putting junk in faster than your body could eliminate it. How severe are the symptoms and how long do they last?

How long the symptoms last and how severe they are depend on what your lifestyle had been before making the positive change, and how quickly you make that change. If your lifestyle changes are gradual, the symptoms will likely be less severe. But the internal clean-out will take longer.

The duration of the symptoms might not be linear; there is a greater chance that they will come in cycles. At first you may feel great and then experience some detoxification symptoms. After the initial toxins are flooded out, you will feel good again, if not better. However, as the body "goes deeper" and finds more toxins and marginal tissues to eliminate; the symptoms may reappear again, and after more rebuilding is complete, you will feel better yet. As things progress, you will find that the period of symptoms is shorter and that the period of well-being is greater.

You may be eating perfectly in regard to quantity, quality, and observing all the correct rules, and still symptoms will occur. Those who have lived better lives in the past -- who have eaten better foods and who have abused their bodies less with overeating will have reactions ranging from almost none at all or very mild symptoms which may be uncomfortable or acute. Those who have lived worse lives and poisoned themselves more will experience more severe symptoms if their liver, kidneys, or other important eliminating organs have been damaged. When they have been renovated to the point of fair working order, they will no longer produce symptoms.

In a nut shell, we could say that the body always goes for quality, and when the food coming in is of higher quality than the present tissue, the body will break down and recycle the present tissue in order to make room for healthier tissue created by the higher quality food.

What can I do during this period?

The hardest thing for people to do is to accept that they are not sick and realize that the body is cleansing itself. Once you get beyond this psychological barrier, the rest is easy. The most important things to do can be summed up: Sleep and Rest.

Rest, sleep and let the body do what it needs to do. If you have the luxury of staying home, do so! Give your body as much energy as possible to do its job. Eat light foods that are easy to digest - consume fruits and vegetables and drink plenty of water. Get fresh air and breathe deep. Get natural light and moderate sunshine.

The more you rest and sleep when symptoms are present, the milder they are and the more quickly they are terminated. Be happy you are having symptoms. Realize deeply that your body is becoming younger and healthier every day because you are throwing off more and more wastes which would eventually have brought pain, disease, and much suffering. Those who have the worst symptom-reactions and follow through to their successful termination are thus avoiding some of the worst diseases which would eventually have developed had they continued their careless eating habits.

We must learn to obey the laws of Nature. We must learn to eat simple, pure, and natural foods, properly prepared, and our bodies in return will cast off all the poisons we have taken in during our lives. The mysteries of the body, the operations of nature, the vital forces working in nature are far beyond what our minds are prepared to understand at present. Every great physician or scientist who ever lived has marveled in awe and humility at the wonders of nature. Yes -- we are "fearfully and wonderfully made!

Why You Have Arthritis

Years ago when a man or woman had pains and inflammation in the muscles and/or joints, rheumatism was the likely diagnosis.

Rheumatism took many forms, such as inflammatory, muscular and joint rheumatism. In the lower back it may have been called lumbago. Rheumatism of the chest muscles received the name pleurodynia. Sometimes this was mistaken for pleurisy. Then there was the acute form that was known as rheumatic fever.

Today, the term rheumatic is not much used. The "old disease" has been fragmented into arthritis, of which several varieties are listed: lumbago, bursitis, sciatica and other so-called diseases. Chronic rheumatism of the joints (rheumatoid arthritis) is said to sometimes follow a cold, acute rheumatism, and tonsillitis, and is sometimes thought to develop independently of these "diseases." It may develop in any joint in the body and slowly extend to other joints, but has a tendency to develop first in joints that have been injured.

In persons past forty, sprains and other injuries are sometimes followed by the development of arthritis. The joints don't heal perfectly but remain stiff and even painful, with the result that the limb is weakened or even crippled.

The reason for the joint's failure to heal is that the individual is already toxemic and ripe for the development of arthritis. Such a development may receive the name traumatic arthritis. Arthritis is a frequent development in athletes whose activities place a great strain on their joints. The strains do not cause the arthritis but indicate where in the body it may develop. It is more likely that the disease is caused by the athletes' well-known excesses in eating and sex.

Arthritis may develop at any season of the year but most frequently in the winter season, and cold seems to make the symptoms worse. The disease is much more prevalent in cold climates than in warm areas. However, there is no reason to think that climate, per se, is a cause of the disease. It is more probable that the inactivity of the indoor life, the lack of fresh air and the overeating of the richer foods that characterize winter living are the chief causes. It should not have to be repeated that any influence that produces enervation and checks excretion will contribute to arthritis.

All so-called rheumatic conditions were once attributed to the accumulation of uric acid within the body. There are those who still hold to this older theory. This acid is one of the end-products of protein metabolism, but it is unlikely that any one of the end products of metabolism (this is to say, any one of the wastes of the body) is solely responsible for the disease. There may be some deposit of uric acid crystals in the capillaries but this does not seem to be the cause of arthritic diseases.

The idea that arthritis and other "rheumatic" diseases are caused by the accumulation in the body of uric acid led to the idea that flesh eating causes or helps to cause such affections. The fact is that excessive starch and sugar eating seems to have more to do with the evolution of arthritis than does flesh eating. But we cannot, in seeking causes, point to any one habit of life or to any one article or one class of food. The total enervating mode of living and the total toxic load carried by the individual must be regarded as cause.

Fermentation in the stomach and intestines (indigestion) resulting from wrong combinations is perhaps more important as a factor in causing this condition than the food itself. In most, if not all, cases of arthritis there is a long history of indigestion preceding the development of the joint inflammation. (Inflammation of a joint is the meaning of the term "arthritis").

Food combinations that do not digest readily favor fermentation and putrefaction. If elimination is also checked as a result of an enervating mode of living, the toxins absorbed from the digestive tract tend to accumulate in the body. This results in the evolution of disease in line with the individual diathesis.

Indigestion, whether resulting from wrong combining or from any other cause, favors the evolution of serious disease. The liver and kidneys are constantly taxed beyond their limit in excreting the poisons that come from indigestion. It becomes impossible for them to keep the blood and tissues free of waste and the absorbed poisons. The resulting accumulation of toxins from the tissues and from the digestive tract causes disease.

While arthritis is frequent among athletes and physical laborers, a lack of exercise may also contribute to its causation. It is impossible to have normal health without adequately meeting the normal needs of life. A sedentary existence is itself a cause of a general lowering of the tone and functioning vigor of the body. The inactive person has sluggish circulation. This prevents normal tissue renewal. The groundwork is thus prepared for the development of disease.

Among the most common causes of indigestion are overeating, drinking with meals, eating when fatigued, eating immediately before engaging in heavy work, eating when emotionally stressed, eating between meals, lack of sleep, and taking drugs. Among the common causes of enervation, a state that both checks excretion and impairs digestion, are all drug habits - coffee, tea, chocolate, alcohol, tobacco, antacid tablets, headache pills, sleeping pills, and so forth, as well as poor physical habits: overworking, sexual excesses, over-sunning, over-bathing and all other excesses. Overworked emotions are one of the main causes of enervation.

It is said that "rheumatism" almost always weakens the heart. Great numbers of cases of so-called "rheumatic heart" are credited to "rheumatic fever" in infancy and early childhood. It has been known for over eighty years that the salicylates (aspirin) damage the heart. Yet, when this drug is freely given in so-called rheumatic fever and in arthritis and the heart is damaged, the effects of the drug are ignored. Heart damage rarely occurs in cases not treated with drugs.

Many years ago, Sir William Osler said in his Principles and Practices of Medicine, "The salicylates (a class of drugs which we have previously pointed out is employed in almost all treatment of the so-called rheumatic diseases) are useless." They are employed to relieve pain and for no other purpose. The patient pays a fearful price for a brief respite from pain, for it is necessary to repeat the dose at intervals and to increase both the frequency and the size of the dose as the use of the drug is continued.

It is freely admitted by the profession (an admission that even the venders of patent medicines keep echoing) that there is no cure for arthritis. All the drugs employed in the treatment of arthritic sufferers are employed as palliatives. Cortisone has replaced the old standby of yesteryear - potassium iodide. It may be less damaging than the older drug but is no longer thought of as anything more than palliative. It has very harmful side effects and will sooner or later be abandoned.

The climate cure, the Turkish bath cure, the hot springs and mineral springs cure, massage, etc., have been and are popular in treating arthritis. They have no other apparent benefits than that of temporarily palliating symptoms. As palliatives they are less damaging than drugs. This is the best that can be said of them. The sweat baths, hot baths, prolonged-baths, massage and similar treatments add to the enervation of the patient and help to prolong the disease.

Nothing short of the removal and correction of the causes of enervation assure a reestablishment of health. Rest is the means of restoring normal nerve energy - rest of body and mind. Physiological rest (fasting) is the surest, best and most satisfactory means of promoting the excretion of accumulated toxins. A corrected mode of living after the fast will prevent a return of the toxemic state and promote the evolution of good health. The arthritic who has a remedy mentality will search in vain for a remedy that will restore him to health; the intelligent individual will live in a way that promotes health. Health is the result of healthful living; it is not the product of the cures.

Chronic rheumatoid arthritis is a state from which full and lasting recovery is easily possible if a Hygienic program is fitted to the individual's needs before irreparable damage has occurred in the joint tissues. Even apparently hopeless cases make full recovery. There are, in many advanced cases, tissue changes that cannot be undone. This makes it all the more important that Hygiene be adopted early.

Self-Doubt

Disbelief in ourselves, what we are capable of, is by far the greatest limitation there is. Every single person wrestles with it every day in one way or another. Most wrestle with it in dozens of ways daily. Talk about constant stress! All self-imposed. For most it shows up as an attitude of judgment towards others; i.e. we externally project our own doubts onto others, because they have
become crystalized and hardened in us, and so now we "know" that it's "just not possible." If someone else can do it, or appears to be it, we make them wrong inside our own mind, and attempt to prove it by endless intellectual debate. At other times we just yell at them or shrink away from them..... both imbalanced responses to our own self-doubt.

There is a time of information reprogramming that must happen. You have the information right in your hands. Truly, however, this information is useless unless one develops the capacity to "let it in."

How to develop that capacity? One must drop self-doubt for a moment. Drop self-doubt, and all of its cousins - arrogance, pride, low self esteem, low self worth, etc. Each of these is simply one thought, a thought that you had somewhere way back when, and you have built on it from there. These self-limiting thoughts are no more "you" than are the clothes you are wearing right now. Drop the thoughts/attitudes just like you take off you jacket.

In that moment of clarity, you can "let in" the truth of what you are capable of, be it healthier, eating well, stronger, smarter and so on. What will happen is that the truth of these new possibilities will come face-to-face with the truth that lies inside your heart, and you will know, beyond a shadow of a doubt, whether it is in fact true for you. You will know this has happened when there is a whole body "wave" of peacefulness and ease that rolls through you. All mental and physical tension will melt away; a sign that your whole Being has "taken it in."

Ironically, in the deeper sense, you are actually not letting anything in, but rather, through the moment of dropping self-doubt, you have finally given yourself permission to let your goodness out. When your internal goodness jumps out and meets a reflection of goodness from "outside" of you, it says, "Yes! Good to meet you! Come on in and let's get to know one another." It is a meeting of Truth and Truth, Love and Love, Life and Life. There is a simple rejoicing in this meeting and a knowing of the rightness of that which supports, nurtures and encourages Life.

Then, it is TRUE, without a doubt, and all is well.

Food Combining

The food which humans eat, though- very important, is not more so than the efficiency of their digestion for poor digestion will fail to prepare the best food for the body's nutritive use. This is why some consideration should be given to our eating practices. There are many things that impair digestion, just as there are many things that enhance it.

Vinegar Interferes With Digestion

Experiments have shown that as small a proportion of vinegar as one in 5,000 appreciably diminishes the digestion of starch by its inhibiting or destructive effect upon the salivary enzyme, amylase, One part in 1,000 makes starch digestion very slow and twice this quantity stops it altogether.

From these facts it becomes evident that vinegar, pickles (saturated with vinegar), salads on which vinegar has been sprinkled and salad dressings containing vinegar (almost all do) are unwholesome substances. They should not be taken into the human digestive tract, especially when eaten with starchy foods such as grains, breads, legumes, potatoes, etc.

Vinegar Is Toxic

Vinegar is not an evil merely because the acetic acid (a highly toxic substance) which it contains destroys ptyalin (salivary amylase). It also contains alcohol and this precipitates the pepsin of the gastric juice and retards or prevents gastric digestion of proteins.

What wonder, then, that pickles and vinegar have been found useful in reducing weight. They cripple the first two stages of digestion. My readers should know that apple cider vinegar, which is so highly praised today as a "wonder drug" in folk medicine, contains both acetic acid and alcohol. Therefore it is unfit for use, not only because it impairs digestion, but also because it contains these two virulent poisons.

Acid-Starch Combinations

All acids destroy salivary amylase, the starch-splitting enzyme in the saliva, and thus arrest starch digestion in both the mouth and the stomach. Even those acids that are valuable as food, such as the acids of pineapples, grapefruit, oranges, tangerines, lemons, limes, tomatoes, apples, grapes, peaches, cherries, etc., destroy the amylase of the saliva and arrest the digestion of starch.

For this reason, such foods should not be eaten at the same meal with starches (such as potatoes, rice and other grains, legumes (beans and peas), Jerusalem artichokes, carrots, cauliflower, parsnips and similar foods).

Acid-Protein Combinations

Acids also inhibit the secretion of gastric juice; hence they suspend or retard protein digestion in the stomach. The acid fruits listed in the above paragraph should not be eaten with protein foods such as nuts and seeds.

Baking Powder, Baking Soda and Drugs

The pepsin in the gastric juice is the enzyme that initiates protein digestion. As I mentioned above, alcohol precipitates the pepsin of the gastric juice and impairs protein digestion. There are may other substances that destroy pepsin. Extensive tests have shown that the residues left in bread by baking powders retard the digestion of protein. Although most of these tests were made with cream of tartar powders, there does not seem to be any powder that is exempt from this effect.

Baking soda also destroys pepsin and retards gastric digestion. Many drugs, both acids and alkalis, have been used to reduce weight because they retard digestion.

The Importance of Correct Food Combining

Anything that either inhibits the secretion of the digestive juices, alters their chemistry or destroys their enzymes will retard or suspend the process of digestion. It is important, therefore, that we take nothing with our foods that either alters the acid-alkaline reactions of the digestive fluids, inhibits their secretion or destroys their enzymes; and it is important that we refrain from eating foods at the same meal that either directly or indirectly interfere with the digestion of each other.

Coffee, Tea and Condiments Interfere With Digestion

Tea and coffee, both because of the caffeine and other toxic substances they contain and because of the sugar that is commonly taken with them, inhibit the digestion of foods in the stomach. They are common causes of indigestion.

Condiments of all kinds also inhibit stomach digestion because they irritate the stomach. Because condiments are indigestible and occasion irritation throughout the whole length of the digestive tract, it is likely that they also inhibit intestinal digestion. Salt inhibits stomach digestion, also,

There are a number of products widely sold in health food stores that consist of powdered vegetables, some of them containing highly salty seaweeds, others with salt added. They are used to make broths and are sprinkled on salads and other foods as seasonings and supplements. They inhibit stomach digestion, sometimes for hours.

Onion, Garlic, Etc. Irritate Tissues and Cause Indigestion

All members of the onion family - onions, garlic, leeks, shallots, chives, etc. - as well as radishes and all other foods containing appreciable amounts of mustard oil - inhibit digestion. This is because they occasion irritation of the stomach and intestines just like they irritate the mouth and throat. Horseradish and mustard are especially strong in occasioning irritation but ordinary white and red radishes cause considerable irritation, too, There is no good reason why we should eat such foods.

The Wisdom of Correct Food Combining

It is wise to refrain from eating practices that retard, inhibit and impair digestion, rather than to eat in the indiscriminate and haphazard manner that is common and then resort to drugs to palliate the resulting discomfort. To avoid discomfort by avoiding its cause is certainly preferable to deliberately inviting trouble and then seeking to palliate it with drugs that are worse in their damaging effects than the foods, food additives and combinations that are responsible for the initial trouble

How I Discovered Raw Porridge

As a kid growing up I was constantly fed cooked porridge for breakfast. I sometimes liked it and found it sustaining, but really got sick of being fed so much porridge. There were a couple of varieties of porridge that I distinctly disliked and it was a chore to chomp through it. Overall the porridge made me feel too heavy. I often had mucus discharge symptoms and colds.

One delight of eating raw is feeling Light and breezy. Recently i accidentally discovered Raw Porridge. This happened when putting mature coconut flesh through my Champion juicer.
The juicer extracts the creamy coconut juice from the pulp. I then put frozen banana through the juicer and mixed the banana and coconut cream together with a little bit of the coconut pulp.
Sometimes I also add a touch of frozen mango.

When I sat down to eat this delicious mixture it felt sustaining and rich like an oatmeal porridge. My childhood memories of eating cooked porridge flooded back into my consciousness, only this time I was eating an all raw porridge, more delicious than anything ever tasted before! Now I feel like a real kid again, having her second raw childhood. How cool to be eating raw porridge without the emotional-nutritional weights of the old porridge holding me down!
