November, 2002
Hello Dave,
I am very happy to tell you that we have started a Natural Hygiene study group in Israel. Flyers with the logo of HLI are hanging on the walls. Raw food and Natural Hygiene books are exhibited as well as the Living Nutrition Magazines. The people who came to my introduction lecture seem to be very interested.
Tomorrow we are participating in the first (to the best of my knowledge) raw food potluck in Israel. The Israelis are asking the English speaking people among us: "what is a potluck?" We are looking forward to meeting many more raw fooders there.
Yours,
Zohar Yitzchak

Healthful World Vision
The Aims and Potential of Healthful Living International
by Dana Clare
<reddurian@bigpond.com>
Healthful Living International aims to assist in creating a global community of healthful living beings, skilled in the principles, practice and art of healthful living. HLI is taking shape and is the international focus for Natural Hygiene, transformation and healthful living in the 21st Century.
All aspects of healthful living are interrelated and require a wholistic perspective. The following points address some of the indivisible aspects of a healthful lifestyle for a new consciousness and world
Healthful Garden Culture/Nutrition/Ecology/Abundance
A healthful agriculture or garden culture is one that is based on the principles of healthful living. We know that a plant and tree-based culture and diet of living-raw, organically grown, whole foods is best for the health of our bodies and best for the health of the Earth. A diverse garden culture would be most suited to such healthful food production. A food-bearing garden supports health by providing fresh, whole foods, connection with Nature, trees, beauty, fresh air, self-sufficiency and the opportunity for physical activity. A community of healthful living beings would encourage the beauty and health enhancing nature of forests and gardens to weave their way into our lives, our architecture, our town planning, our work places and living arrangements. The art of creating beautiful, organic, food-bearing gardens and other skills that enhance self-sufficiency would be a major part of an individual's education in a healthful world.
The food shortage/soil degradation problem would be solved once and for all as the healthful living credo takes root and the roots of food-bearing trees and plants spread under the earth holding it together.
Universal Consciousness, Equality and Healthful Living
"Equality Consciousness" stems from the truth and perception of Oneness, namely that we all come from and are expressions of Universal Light, Energy or Consciousness. In this perception of Oneness, science and religion merge. The Universal Light, Energy or Consciousness of which we are, is the unifying factor of all humankind and all of life. This awareness of Oneness leads to "equality consciousness". In "equality consciousness" we have the perception that all are in essence equal and the same in this Oneness, regardless of external characteristics which differ according to colour of skin, race, sex, belief, role, experience, aptitude, species or culture. On the social level in human society, "equality consciousness" manifests as equality in law and in practice of socio-political-economic rights, freedoms and responsibilities regardless of external differences such as race, sex, colour, social status, sexual preference, religion, culture or belief. If we are aware of our Oneness, then we would not seek to deny others within the Oneness the same rights, resources, responsibilities and freedoms that we enjoy. We would not seek to discriminate against others on the basis of external differences as we would only be discriminating against our Self. An awareness of Oneness enables us to simultaneously enjoy and honor the diverse expressions of this Oneness whilst savoring the feeling of love, peace and joy that comes from recognizing the underlying unity of these diverse expressions of Life.
For thousands of years, human society and consciousness has failed to live in the awareness of Oneness. Human consciousness and society has been and still is divided and conflicted along lines of sex, class, race, ethnicity, religion, ideology, social status and species. These artificial and manufactured social divisions prevent us from realizing our Oneness or Unity with all of Life. Such artificial divisions also give strength to the power elites who manipulate human beings around such divisions to fight, struggle and compete against each other. There is also the opposite strategy of being brought into a false unity, one which is still based on fear, control and the dominance of power elites, who use the facade of unity to gain ever greater control. Current trends towards globalization of control of wealthy, powerful elites and their vision of "One World Government" re examples of "false unity" strategies.
An important part of healthful living is being whole and becoming free in one's consciousness of unnatural, man-made divisions, free of fear and free of control strategies. The more we realize our true Oneness in Light, the more whole and healed we become and the more whole and healed the Earth becomes.
As part of healthful living we need to correct the current power imbalance between the sexes on this planet. For thousands of years we have had a patriarchal paradigm that grants or promises men power and dominion over the Earth. Within this paradigm the relationship between men and women has been structured around domination and subordination rather than expressing unity, love and equality. For healthful living to manifest we need to abandon the perverted, power/domination paradigm which has imprisoned and poisoned the Earth. Healthful Living is based on a relationship of "Love/Co-operation/Harmony" with the Earth. Instead of seeking power over others or over the Earth, healthful living beings connect with the delightful power of Truth, Love and Joy within and give this energy to the Earth. As the Earth nourishes and sustains our bodies, healthful living beings bring the nourishment of their Light and Love to the Earth.
The power imbalance between the sexes has also extended to a domination of conditioned "masculine" intellect over the feelings that are considered to be "weak" or "feminine". An important aspect of becoming whole is balancing and integrating our intellectual nature with our feeling nature. Intellect and feeling are twin aspects of our one consciousness and neither should dominate or cloud the other. For healthful living we need to awaken our intellects and purify our feeling nature so that both can flow harmoniously together in service of Truth, Wisdom, Health and Love.
To remove causes of poverty and overpopulation, we need to support and encourage women in their quest for human rights. Women require freedom and equitable access to social resources to determine their destinies on all levels. In a healthful world there would be encouragement for breastfeeding and economically independent motherhood by creating mother/baby friendly working environments and or paid maternity/paternity leave. There would also be encouragement and support for men to be involved in caring for children. A healthful living world requires a genuine, respectful relationship between women and men as equally valued, free, unique beings. Identity based on the duality of sex or gender would not be primary in a healthful world. Instead as free beings, we would be taking delight in and primary sustenance from unlabeled, ungendered, unconditioned Be-ing which is our True Nature.
Science and Technology
As humans turn into healthful living beings the demand for Life-enhancing, Nature-harmonizing technologies would replace the current plethora of life-draining, Nature-disrupting, polluting technologies. Healthful living beings and their scientific endeavor would be based on the principle that we are an integral part of Nature and not the overlords or manipulators of Nature. The purpose of science and technology would be to better understand Nature and to co-operate with her in ways that can enhance life rather than in ways that poison, distort, enslave, manipulate or mutate life.
A True Health-Care System
Any health care system required in a healthful world or in transition to it, would need to be based on identifying and removing the causes of disease and facilitating the individuals self-healing power through education in healthful living. In a health-aware world we would no longer see disease as the enemy which we need to fight with drugs, vaccines, radiation and other harmful methods. Instead we would realize that our faulty lifestyles are the cause of all our diseases and the only way we can prevent disease or heal once diseased is through adopting the ways of healthful living. The new type of health practitioner would be one that is educated, not in the symptomatic treatment of disease, but one that is educated in the principles and practice of healthful living and self-healing. HLI has already created an international group of "Healthful Living Consultants" who are working towards supporting and educating such true health practitioners.
Healthful Education
In a healthful living world the focus in education would shift from mere cultivation of intellect and accumulation of knowledge to a healthfully balanced culture of body wisdom, nature connection, heart-centered awareness, physical activity, aware learning and unlearning, rest and recuperation . Courses in Healthful Living would jump to the forefront of Curriculums. The understanding of meditation would find rightful place within education to enable us to appreciate the importance of quietude and emptiness of mind to understanding, fresh perception and learning. The educational process would be forged within a balance of knowledge acquisition and knowledge shedding, critique and openness to new perspectives. Education for a quiet, alert, aware, unburdened, spacious and free mind would open us to greater depth, awareness, and joy in living. Health of body and mind would be encouraged not as ends in themselves, nor to idolize or fetishize the body, but rather so we can more readily tune into undivided integrity of be-ing, feel our joy in living, our oneness in spirit and bring those qualities into daily living.
Purpose of Healthful Living
In a health-aware world the deeper meaning or purpose of living would shift from competitive achievement, status acquisition and perpetuating past traditions, to discovering the here and now moment of living, discovering what or who we really are and what we are doing here on this planet. Ongoing awareness of our multidimensional selves, our true nature, discovery of our connection with other life-forms and the Earth that supports, sustains and nourishes us, would be both the meaning and art of living.
Liberation From Fear
Understanding the principles and practice of healthful living can free the human race from the most powerful energy ever manipulated for our continued enslavement. That energy is FEAR. The human race is caught in fear and the control methods that stem from fear. There is fear of disease, fear of war, fear of poverty, fear of aging, fear of viruses, fear of environmental degradation, fear of our self-healing energy, fear of letting go of traditions, fear of the Gods we create, fear of aloneness, fear instilled by systems of religion, military, government and medicine. The orchestrated economic crises unleash fear of economic uncertainty and potential or real poverty and deprivation.
By beginning with understanding the needs of our super-intelligent bodies and nurturing them into high level health, by learning to understand our minds and emotions, and the social context in which we live, by connecting with our True Nature from moment to moment, we can start to dissolve the layers of fear within and without which keep us from living fully as free and aware beings. The HLI vision of a healthful world, is one that is liberated from the fear/control/illusion energy, that is still dominant on this planet. Once our limited consciousness is freed of fear/control/illusion, our inner awareness or enlightened consciousness will unfold spontaneously on all levels.
Attaining a Healthful Consciousness and World
We do not need any ideological blueprints or systems for attaining a Healthful World. Ideological blueprints trap us in the limitations of conditioned thought and trap us in the inevitable divisions and conflict that ideologies engender. Instead of tethering our minds to ideologies of the past, we need instead to trust and flow with the Now Moment. The Now Moment is timeless and lifts us beyond the limitations of conditioned thought. If we understand the principles of healthful living and also trust and flow with the Now Moment of Life, that combination will usher in spontaneous and deep transformations on an individual level. As all individuals are interrelated, individual transformation also manifests at the collective level. Such transformation is ongoing and occurs from moment to moment, in ways that are beyond the grasp of our limited minds.
A consciousness which is free from attachment to beliefs and ideologies, a consciousness which is beyond political, religious, social and economic divisions is the consciousness best poised to usher in a healthful living world. We do not have to wait till tomorrow or next life for this free consciousness. We can incarnate it Now, through awakened minds/hearts/bodies. Healthful Living Beings will become highly tuned antennae for the influx/outflux of healing energies for the planet and ourselves. To feel ourselves Now in the Oneness of Life is the gift that healthful living can bring.
Creating the Global Community of Healthful Living Beings
If living in a health-loving world is the environment you would like to live in, if you would like to realize an awakened, free consciousness in your life and support the development of an international focus for Natural Hygiene/ transformation/healthful living, consider sponsoring and connecting yourself to the HLI Community of healthful living beings. Individual Sovereignty
by Dr. Robert Sniadach
<rwsniadach@transformationinst.com>
Natural Hygiene holds that everyone is an independent entity unto himself or herself. Everyone should be entirely free - fettered in no way within the context of enlightened self-interest. Everyone should be free to do whatever they choose to do, so long as their actions do not impinge on the equal rights of others. Forceful aggression of one person upon another cannot be tolerated, except in the case of self defense. Along with our inherent birthright of freedom comes the requirement of self-responsibility for our actions.
Every man and woman must be regarded as capable of carrying on life's affairs for himself or herself. It is not our role to judge or impose ourselves on others but simply to help if our aid is sought. We should not impose ourselves on anyone no matter how wise or unwise, or how good or bad such imposition is or would be. The most we can do is teach by word and by example. The power of persuasion is the main tool in our toolkit. We must give to everyone the prerogative of leading their lives as is their desire and capability so long as their pursuits do not impinge upon the equal rights of others. This golden rule should be our rule of conduct.
While it may seem unwise to grant the same privileges and prerogatives to both the genius and the relatively unlettered, nevertheless a society is not free in which either are denied their right to pursue life, liberty, property and happiness on an equal footing. With focused thinking and perseverance, the capable are bound to succeed and should offer aid to their biologically crippled or less favored brethren.
We must always respect everyone as supremely sovereign. Whatever they do or decide, however good or bad their acts or decisions, we must pursue a role of noninterference. We may, by example, seek to inspire and motivate. But to impose ourselves and our ideas on others is reprehensible.

Teaching Meditation and Presence in Prison
An Interview with Art Baker
<artbaker111@yahoo.com>
by David Klein
<dave@livingnutrition.com>
(Forthcoming in Living Nutrition Magazine vol. 13)
DK: Art, I am in awe of you for bringing meditation to people in our prisons. How did you know that the prison system would be receptive to this experience and where did you hear about this opportunity?
AB: I'm involved in the Gangaji Prison Program. Gangaji is a world-renown teacher of non-dualism. She has a Buddhist prison program that shares non-duality in prisons across the country, although she is not Buddhist. Rather, her message passes along teachings of Ramana Maharshi, and Hariwansh Lal Poonja (Poonjaji), two hindu sages who died in 1950 and 1997 respectively. Gangaji also gives talks (satsangs) to folks like you and me who are not in prison. I got involved in the prison program through Gangajis teachings.
DK: Are all prisons receptive to this?
AB: The way it works is the inmates make a request for us to come in. Over the years, Gangaji's teachings have become popular because they originate from Ramana Maharshi, who was an extremely prominent Indian sage. Over the last 52 years, his teachings have become more popular than ever, especially in the West. Many inmates have heard of Ramana Maharshi, and they learn that his teachings are being propagated through people like Gangaji. They find out about the Gangaji Prison Program through her books, audios, videos, or her web site and contact her foundation. We then get invited into the prisons.
DK: So when you go into the prisons, how many people are you actually meeting with?
AB: It can vary. For example, typically when I go into the prison there is a core group of about six to ten inmates. Yet when Gangaji comes into town in person, as when she was here in Portland about three months ago, we went into the federal prison with her and about 60 inmates showed up to visit and listen. That's also true with her husband, Eli Jaxon-Bear, who is also a prominent teacher worldwide with a similar non-dual teaching. He was also in Portland just a month ago and he's been going into the prisons as well. About forty inmates showed up to hear him speak.
DK: How much time do you typically spend in the prison?
AB: I spend about two or three hours with them each visit. Right now, I'm in a Federal prison in Sheridan, about an hour outside of Portland. I've also visited two state prisons, about 45 minutes from Portland.
DK: Does one need to be certified in some way to do this?
AB: Yes. It is strictly on a volunteer basis. A team of us are developing a proposal for the state prisons right now in conjunction with the psychology department at Portland State University. The state prisons in Oregon are now giving money to programs like this to help cut the recidivism rate--repeat offenders who return to prison after they have been released due to continued criminal behavior. Oregon cannot build prisons fast enough any longer, due to Measure 13, the one-strike-and-you're-out law passed in Oregon (meaning you're locked up in jail with a mandatory minimum sentence). So Oregon has given us an opportunity to develop a program that incorporates Gangaji's prison project to help break criminal habits, and prevent further recidivism.
DK: Superb! So they want to implement a program for the entire state of Oregon, and other states might follow suit?
AB: Exactly. I am really excited about this opportunity.
DK: So, typically how is your two or three hours of time spent with inmates in prison?
AB: A lot of inmates, of course, are already very familiar with these teachings, since they have invited us in there. They watch videos that our organization sends to them. So, we go in and meditate with them and then talk about their daily experiences and challenges in a prison environment. We talk about how to implement this teaching into their daily lives. So, we'll meditate and we'll discuss the videos and teachings in detail. Often times, the experience with inmates is very intimate and rich because there is a sharing that takes place on a very deep level. The inmates really appreciate us coming in and are committed to really exposing the tricks of the mind that keep the heart veiled. So, whether it's in a prison environment or not, intimacy
develops quickly with groups that are devoted to this teaching.
DK: Are you talking about a sitting meditation with eyes closed or open?
AB: Both. We start with eyes closed in silence and then that stillness continues with eyes open as our dialog begins. The time with eyes closed is simply a way to settle down the mind and to directly experience profound silence. With eyes open, that meditation continues, along with continuing dialog, like you and I are having right now. But it is more from the heart than from the mind.
DK: Has there been any data collected about how these people are faring after they get out of prison?
AB: There is a video we use called "Freedom in Prison" produced by the Gangaji prison project to introduce this program to the chapel and Warden at the Penitentiary. In this video, we document a number of inmates in interviews with Gangaji speaking about their experiences in prison. They talk about their initial exposure to this teaching and how it has transformed them. Many of these inmates were repeat offenders, and prior to their exposure to this non-dual teaching were really imprisoned in their minds, as is true for nearly everyone. As this "mental imprisonment" was resolved, they were able to stop the habits and patterns that led them to repeated criminal activity. Since being released, they have been able to not only stay out of prison, but lead productive lives. Most importantly, they are able to approach and understand life with an unconditional, non-sentimental love, which they spontaneously share with others.
DK: Have you gotten any feedback from the inmates as to how this experience is transforming them? For example, has their perspective changed so that they feel happier and more positive about life and their prospects when they get out of prison?
AB: The inmates that I'm directly involved with exhibit this unfoldment. While finishing their sentence, what appears to be happening is a progressive awakening. The men learn to deal with the ingrained mental conditioning which led them to criminal behavior, and as a result, they're no longer held prisoner by those same habit patterns. Of course, the real proof of this is upon their release. Once that basic mental shift has taken place, recidivism ceases.
DK: Have you had an opportunity to incorporate Healthful Living teachings into your program--including better diet?
AB: Yes, as I've spent time with these inmates, naturally, they ask what I do for a living. I mentioned to them that I've been a Natural Health Educator for a number of years, which includes teaching in the public schools, and giving workshops on Natural Hygiene. I tell them what Natural Hygiene is and mention that I eat nothing but raw food. Like most people, they find this interesting. Some of the inmates are vegetarians and a few are vegans and devout Buddhists.
DK: How it is possible to eat that way in the prison environment?
AB: I've actually seen what their diet is like by looking at their menus, and the list of what's available to them in commissary. Interestingly enough, they can eat raw if they want, because they have raw trail mix available to them for purchase with the small amount of money they earn from jobs performed behind bars. They also have a salad bar that is available at each meal. I'm sure it's not like the salad bar spread at Whole Foods or Wild Oats or any other health food store that many of us are familiar with. But nevertheless, at least it's available to them. I believe they also have foods such as raisins and sunflower seeds available.
DK: Im sure the readers of this interview are wondering, how are Buddhists getting into prison? Do you have any insight into that?
AB: What happens usually, is the inmates become Buddhists after they're already in prison.
DK: How does this happen?
AB: Well, a lot of these guys are realizing the futility of searching for happiness and lasting fulfillment through a criminal lifestyle. The men attracted to this teaching who stick with it are true seekers confronting their negative habit patterns and conditioning. They have been involved in enough criminal activity to know that they can have all the drugs, all the money, and all the girlfriends, and it still doesn't lead to happiness. Thus, they're driven within as they learn that happiness is an inside job. In prison they have available through the chapel program, different spiritual and religious books and scriptures that have been donated to the prison system. Some of them turn to Buddhism and some of turn to non-dual teachings such as Gangaji's. Examples of non-dual teachings include Advaita Hinduism, Zen Buddhism, the Kaballistic Judaism, and Mystic Christianity, representing the major religions around the world. These inmates have books available on these various topics and that's how some of them choose to become Buddhists.
DK: What are your goals with the prison system? Do you plan on incorporating Natural Hygiene thereby affecting the policies of this whole program?
AB: What I'd love to see is the success of this prison program to spread, not only from coast to coast, worldwide. Obviously, there is very little true correction taking place in these so-called "correction institutions". Unfortunately, when you become familiar with the politics behind it, one finds there is a lot of money made in the Federal prison system, where the prisons are often run by outside contractors. They need bodies to fill the jails. Human life becomes a commodity, and it's really a travesty. What usually happens when typical prisoners spend time behind bars, is that they actually learn more criminal skills from fellow inmates, and wind up becoming more proficient in criminality, rather than learning how to break out of that pattern. What I see from the Gangaji prison program is a way to break this negative cycle by helping people realize the truth of who they really are, as opposed to being prisoners of their minds, which perpetuates suffering. In this way, they break that imprisonment and live from their heart's essence. This is a definite movement away from the unnecessary physical, mental and emotional suffering that is perpetuated
by the mass societal conditioning and commercial interests.
DK: Superb Art! Any last comments?
AB: You asked what my goals are here. What I really love about this program is simply sharing my experience with people that are as hungry as I am to wake up. What I really mean when I say waking up is eliminating egoic veils to our "core essence," which incorporates qualities latent within all of us such as love, kindness, joy, spontaneity, purity, and abiding in the peaceful silent aspect of ourselves that most of us desire. That's my major motivation...to enjoy spending time with people, whether behind bars or not, who are focused on waking up to their true essence.

Living hygienically is simple. It means right living, living as healthfully and happily as possible under the conditions to which we are subjected. Our training befits you to guide others to make the most of their lives. Youll free yourself and your clientele from the morass of disease and suffering.

Natural Hygiene is concerned with the whole of life and each factor of life must be recognized as contributing its share of influence and substance to the whole. If we confine ourselves to diet or to physical culture or to cleanliness, we solve only one problem of living and not all of this problem; for all of the factors of living are so correlated and interdependent that none of them is complete without the others.
