Stamping Out Evil
by Dr. V. V. Vetrano
<vvvetrano@rionet.cc>
There is a way to have Universal Peace, Happiness and love as well as prosperity in the world. We do not have to have wars to do so. Wars have been fought from time immemorial and yet there has never been lasting peace, happiness, love or prosperity for all.
We can do it by starting with ourselves. Change your idealization and thoughts from materialism to
spiritualism. Put morality back on the throne and genuinely make an effort to live by it. It must begin with each individual.
Jesus said: "The meek shall inherit the Earth." But many people do not know what meek really means. In those bygone days meek meant self-disciplined. A meek horse, was one that was so well disciplined that the slighted leg or touch of the arm on the horse would cause it do perform a certain way. This is the way we must strive to be, for our success and happiness in this world depends upon our own discipline. Furthermore, meditation helps build discipline by doing it regularly and by doing it regularly disciplines the mind to do our bidding.
We must first begin by being Truth Seekers. It is the first and foremost thing we should seek, not material objects. We must search for it as if we were searching for the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. Everyone in this world is entitled to have the truth. No one person owns it. The truth is found everywhere. We just have to seek it. Don't take everything you hear as the gospel truth. Test it, try it, and then decide whether you think it is the truth. Then, search still further before a final decision. It may be truthful only in certain circumstances.
T. C. Fry used to say: "What's the use of having so much knowledge if it isn't true?" For instance, physicians, have a lot of knowledge. They can perform the most delicate and intricate of operations and the patient lives to talk about it. Surgery is used for the right purposes, to help people, but the surgery was probably unnecessary and often leaves the patient debilitated for years.
The general practice of medicine is based upon untruths, and false assumptions. Therefore, the results of those practices will be failures that bring unhappiness to all, even to the physician who may really be trying to help his patient. He has not first sought truth. He has not delved into the real causes of disease, therefore all his practices are evil because they delude and deceive the patient into thinking that he/she will get well, when in truth the medicine given always enervates, and lessens the vitality of the individual; leaving them worse off than before treatment. An operation is many times unnecessary and its need is caused by palliative medical treatment over a period of years.
However, all the evil in this world is not brought on by the medical profession. We have heard on the news how much deceit and deception is found in the corporate world. The only way to stamp out this evil is to become aware of it and stop doing business with those who deceive, manipulate, rob and who provide shoddy services and goods.
Bad practices automatically die when no one purchases, uses or patronizes the perpetrator. Consequently, the perpetrator makes no money and has to quit. Do business only with those who are honest in every department of their lives all the time. Do business with those who believe and practice the old aphorism that: "Honesty is the best policy." When every transaction is a win-win situation happiness and prosperity abounds and evil is stamped out. It can't exist anymore unless we ourselves fail in awareness of falsities.

Teaching Meditation and Presence in Prison
An Interview with Art Baker
<artbaker111@yahoo.com>
by David Klein
DK: Art, I am in awe of you for bringing meditation to people in our prisons. How did you know that the prison system would be receptive to this experience and where did you hear about this opportunity?
AB: I'm involved in the Gangaji Prison Program. Gangaji is a world-renown teacher of non-dualism. She has a Buddhist prison program that shares non-duality in prisons across the country, although she is not Buddhist. Rather, her message passes along teachings of Ramana Maharshi, and Hariwansh Lal Poonja (Poonjaji), two hindu sages who died in 1950 and 1997 respectively. Gangaji also gives talks (satsangs) to folks like you and me who are not in prison. I got involved in the prison program through Gangaji's teachings.
DK: Are all prisons receptive to this?
AB: The way it works is the inmates make a request for us to come in. Over the years, Gangaji's teachings have become popular because they originate from Ramana Maharshi, who was an extremely prominent Indian sage. Over the last 52 years, his teachings have become more popular than ever, especially in the West. Many inmates have heard of Ramana Maharshi, and they learn that his teachings are being propagated through people like Gangaji. They find out about the Gangaji Prison Program through her books, audios, videos, or her web site and contact her foundation. We then get invited into the prisons.
DK: So when you go into the prisons, how many people are you actually meeting with?
AB: It can vary. For example, typically when I go into the prison there is a core group of about six to ten inmates. Yet when Gangaji comes into town in person, as when she was here in Portland about three months ago, we went into the federal prison with her and about 60 inmates showed up to visit and listen. That's also true with her husband, Eli Jaxon-Bear, who is also a prominent teacher worldwide with a similar non-dual teaching. He was also in Portland just a month ago and he's been going into the prisons as well. About forty inmates showed up to hear him speak.
DK: How much time do you typically spend in the prison?
AB: I spend about two or three hours with them each visit. Right now, I'm in a Federal prison in Sheridan, about an hour outside of Portland. I've also visited two state prisons, about 45 minutes from Portland.
DK: Does one need to be certified in some way to do this?
AB: Yes. It is strictly on a volunteer basis. A team of us are developing a proposal for the state prisons right now in conjunction with the psychology department at Portland State University. The state prisons in Oregon are now giving money to programs like this to help cut the recidivism rate--repeat offenders who return to prison after they have been released due to continued criminal behavior. Oregon cannot build prisons fast enough any longer, due to Measure 13, the one-strike-and-you're-out law passed in Oregon (meaning you're locked up in jail with a mandatory minimum sentence). So Oregon has given us an opportunity to develop a program that incorporates Gangaji's prison project to help break criminal habits, and prevent further recidivism.
DK: Superb! So they want to implement a program for the entire state of Oregon, and other states might follow suit?
AB: Exactly. I am really excited about this opportunity.
DK: So, typically how is your two or three hours of time spent with inmates in prison?
AB: A lot of inmates, of course, are already very familiar with these teachings, since they have invited us in there. They watch videos that our organization sends to them. So, we go in and meditate with them and then talk about their daily experiences and challenges in a prison environment. We talk about how to implement this teaching into their daily lives. So, we'll meditate and we'll discuss the videos and teachings in detail. Often times, the experience with inmates is very intimate and rich because there is a sharing that takes place on a very deep level. The inmates really appreciate us coming in and are committed to really exposing the tricks of the mind that keep the heart veiled. So, whether it's in a prison environment or not, intimacy
develops quickly with groups that are devoted to this teaching.
DK: Are you talking about a sitting meditation with eyes closed or open?
AB: Both. We start with eyes closed in silence and then that stillness continues with eyes open as our dialog begins. The time with eyes closed is simply a way to settle down the mind and to directly experience profound silence. With eyes open, that meditation continues, along with continuing dialog, like you and I are having right now. But it is more from the heart than from the mind.
DK: Has there been any data collected about how these people are faring after they get out of prison?
AB: There is a video we use called "Freedom in Prison" produced by the Gangaji prison project to introduce this program to the chapel and Warden at the Penitentiary. In this video, we document a number of inmates in interviews with Gangaji speaking about their experiences in prison. They talk about their initial exposure to this teaching and how it has transformed them. Many of these inmates were repeat offenders, and prior to their exposure to this non-dual teaching were really imprisoned in their minds, as is true for nearly everyone. As this "mental imprisonment" was resolved, they were able to stop the habits and patterns that led them to repeated criminal activity. Since being released, they have been able to not only stay out of prison, but lead productive lives. Most importantly, they are able to approach and understand life with an unconditional, non-sentimental love, which they
spontaneously share with others.
DK: Have you gotten any feedback from the inmates as to how this experience is transforming them? For example, has their perspective changed so that they feel happier and more positive about life and their prospects when they get out of prison?
AB: The inmates that I'm directly involved with exhibit this unfoldment. While finishing their sentence, what appears to be happening is a progressive awakening. The men learn to deal with the ingrained mental conditioning which led them to criminal behavior, and as a result, they're no longer held prisoner by those same habit patterns. Of course, the real proof of this is upon their release. Once that basic mental shift has taken place, recidivism ceases.
DK: Have you had an opportunity to incorporate "Healthful Living" teachings into your program--including better diet?
AB: Yes, as I've spent time with these inmates, naturally, they ask what I do for a living. I mentioned to them that I've been a Natural Health Educator for a number of years, which includes teaching in the public schools, and giving workshops on Natural Hygiene. I tell them what Natural Hygiene is and mention that I eat nothing but raw food. Like most people, they find this interesting. Some of the inmates are vegetarians and a few are vegans and devout Buddhists.
DK: How it is possible to eat that way in the prison environment?
AB: I've actually seen what their diet is like by looking at their menus, and the list of what's available to them in commissary. Interestingly enough, they can eat raw if they want, because they have raw trail mix available to them for purchase with the small amount of money they earn from jobs performed behind bars. They also have a salad bar that is available at each meal. I'm sure it's not like the salad bar spread at Whole Foods or Wild Oats or any other health food store that many of us are familiar with. But nevertheless, at least it's available to them. I believe they also have foods such as raisins and sunflower seeds available.
DK: I'm sure the readers of this interview are wondering, "how are Buddhists getting into prison?" Do you have any insight into that?
AB: What happens usually, is the inmates become Buddhists after they're already in prison.
DK: How does this happen?
AB: Well, a lot of these guys are realizing the futility of searching for happiness and lasting fulfillment through a criminal lifestyle. The men attracted to this teaching who stick with it are true seekers confronting their negative habit patterns and conditioning. They have been involved in enough criminal activity to know that they can have all the drugs, all the money, and all the girlfriends, and it still doesn't lead to happiness. Thus, they're driven within as they learn that happiness is an inside job. In prison they have available through the chapel program, different spiritual and religious books and scriptures that have been donated to the prison system. Some of them turn to Buddhism and some of turn to non-dual teachings such as Gangaji's. Examples of non-dual teachings include Advaita Hinduism, Zen Buddhism, the Kaballistic Judaism, and Mystic Christianity, representing the major religions around the world. These inmates have books available on these various topics and that's how some of them choose to become Buddhists.
DK: What are your goals with the prison system? Do you plan on incorporating Natural Hygiene thereby affecting the policies of this whole program?
AB: What I'd love to see is the success of this prison program to spread, not only from coast to coast, worldwide. Obviously, there is very little true correction taking place in these so-called "correction institutions". Unfortunately, when you become familiar with the politics behind it, one finds there is a lot of money made in the Federal prison system, where the prisons are often run by outside contractors. They need bodies to fill the jails. Human life becomes a commodity, and it's really a travesty. What usually happens when typical prisoners spend time behind bars, is that they actually learn more criminal skills from fellow inmates, and wind up becoming more proficient in criminality, rather than learning how to break out of that pattern. What I see from the Gangaji prison program is a way to break this negative cycle by helping people realize "the truth of who they really are," as opposed to being prisoners of their minds, which perpetuates suffering. In this way, they break that imprisonment and live from their heart's essence. This is a definite movement away from the unnecessary physical, mental and emotional suffering that is perpetuated by the mass societal conditioning and commercial interests.
DK: Superb Art! Any last comments?
AB: You asked what my goals are here. What I really love about this program is simply sharing my experience with people that are as hungry as I am to "wake up." What I really mean when I say "waking up" is eliminating egoic veils to our "core essence," which incorporates qualities latent within all of us such as love, kindness, joy, spontaneity, purity, and abiding in the peaceful silent aspect of ourselves that most of us desire. That's my major motivation...to enjoy spending time with people, whether behind bars or not, who are focused on waking up to their true essence.

TAKE ACTION ON GE TRANSGENIC CONTAMINATION!
WHAT YOU CAN DO?
From the forthcoming Living Nutrition Magazine vol. 13
Farmers planting non-GE (genetically engineered) crops are being sued by Gene Giant Monsanto for inadvertently growing GE crops, the seeds of which have, by various means, trespassed onto their land! The entire future of organic farming is being threatened, as pollen is spread by insects and the wind from GE crops onto organic farms. The outcrossing of plants genetically engineered to be herbicide resistant raises serious questions regarding the emergence of "superweeds" that resist any and all herbicides. Genetically engineered corn is contaminating the world's most important maize center in Mexico!
Not only farmers, but all of nature is at risk from genetic contamination, as more and more patents are being granted for shuffling together the genes of widely varied species, such as animal and bacterial genes into plants.
The Sierra Club is asking Senator Tom Harkin, Chairman of the U.S. Senate Committee on Agriculture, to hold hearings on the contamination caused by the planting of genetically engineered crops. Farmers, consumers and environmentalists can be on the same side of this one--please add your voice to this appeal!
--- SAMPLE LETTER ---
The Honorable Tom Harkin
U.S. Senate
731 Hart Senate Office Bldg.
Washington DC 20510
Phone: (202) 224-3254
Fax: (202) 224-9369
E-mail: Tom_harkin@harkin.senate.gov
Dear Senator Harkin,
I'm writing to ask that you, in your position as Chairman of the U.S. Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry, schedule hearings regarding the contamination of organically-grown crops and all crops intended to be sold as GMO-free. Scientific studies show that genetically modified (GM) pollen is contaminating the crops of organic farmers. Their very livelihood is thus threatened, as they may not be able to market their product as organic. Farmers should not have to individually sue their neighbors planting GM crops that accidentally, by various means, contaminate their fields. Even more than that, farmers who have found their fields contaminated with GM seeds should not be then charged with patent infringement by the seed manufacturers--as has already happened! This also creates an unjust situation for those consumers who seek to purchase products that do not contain GMO ingredients.
These GM foods have not been tested long-term for their effect on human health; prominent scientists agree there is evidence that the risks are potentially quite high. If we allow contamination of the food supply, i.e. by pollen flow, wind, birds, insects, grain elevators, etc., we remove from consumers their right of choice when it comes to these experimental foods.
There is also evidence that GM plants intermingling in the natural environment can cross-pollinate with other plants, cause harm to insects, and potentially endanger the entire interconnected web of nature. The Starlink problem is just a warning of what may come if we do not stop and think ahead. Environmental contamination and "spills" of GMOs are even worse than regular pollution, because GMs continue to propagate and mingle with other plants, potentially changing them drastically and irreversibly. The truth is that drift will happen and we need to recognize this in our regulations of GM materials.
Therefore, I ask that you schedule hearings that include a broad cross-section of views, including those of farmers, consumers, and environmentalists, regarding these important issues.
Sincerely,
(Name and address)

The Durian
by David Klein
<dave@livingnutrition.com>
Durian, the legendary tropical fruit of Oceana, is considered by many to be the ultimate eating experience. Covered with a thick brown spiky husk, it resembles a bizarre medieval football. However, the treasure that lies within is out of this world!
Durians are mainly available in the U.S. and Europe from inner-city Asian food stores. If your Asian grocer does not recognize the name durian, ask for it by the name of its most popular variety grown in Thailand, "monthong." Durians typically arrive frozen from Thailand. They are also grown and, to a lesser extent, exported from Malaysia, the Philippines, Vietnam, northern Australia, Central America and Hawaii. When frozen, they typically sell for around $0.99 to $1.50 per pound; fresh they typically sell for $4.00 per pound. Averaging seven pounds each, durian is an expensive meal but you may find them to be well worth any price!
A good durian has a light fruity aroma, but a durian which has a repulsively noxious aroma may still be good to eat. The husk may he decomposing and releasing sulfurous gases, giving it the characteristic rotten egg aroma. But don't give up--ecstasy resides within!
Durians typically have five inner chambers (or "locules"), each with a soft creamy, yellowish piece of fruit, with one or two large seeds (to be discarded). Each chamber, or pod, has an invisible seam down the middle. When naturally ripened on the tree, the seams split open, yielding fruit for fortunate primate or human connoisseurs. Since virtually no durians arrive at the market split open, you can try feeling for the seam and peeling the pods open with your finger nails. If that fails, a sharp knife will do the trick. Durian can be eaten semi-frozen, providing a delight reminiscent of banana-nut ice cream. Eaten at room temperature after thawing, the durian fruit is amazingly silky and creamy, making it an incomparable, naturally sensual delight. Mildly to moderately sweet, with about eight percent fat content (weightwise), durian is oh so satisfying. However, the secret to the durian's allure goes way beyond the sweetness. All tropical fruits contain natural hormonal proteins, precursors to neurotransmitters which enhance our brain functions and promoting a sense of well-being. The durian apparently is the richest food source of these hormonal proteins, bringing most eaters to a wonderful state of euphoria and happiness, of loving and being loved! Indeed, durian is well known as an aphrodisiac. But if this makes you uneasy, fear not, for the effect is comfortable and natural.
In contrast to the dense, ice cream like texture imparted by freezing, fresh (unfrozen) durian is lighter, reminiscent of whipped cream. If you can shell out the $30 to $36 for a fresh durian, here's hoping that it it is a perfectly ripe one! Durians are available in different varieties, each varying in flavors and textures. Generally, a small percentage of the durians we choose will not be completely ripe. They can be hard, rubbery and unpalatable. The quality of the fruit inside is not easily discerned, making durian buying a bit of a gamble, however, a nice fruity aroma and a light brown husk are the best clues to go by. Avoid dark brown husks, these typically have been thawed out and refrozen one or more times, reducing their flavor and producing the characteristic rotten egg aroma. If you get one or more "bad" durians, don't give up! The next one might provide the eating experience of your life! A good durian is, in my opinion, the ultimate mono meal. Share one with a friend and enjoy this gem of Creation.
